Should I pay for someone's phone I accidentally broke?

I was at a football match recently sitting next to someone who was holding his phone up to take a photo. My team scored and in my excitement I jumped and my hands inadvertently knocked his phone out of his hand, and it smashed on the floor. He wasn't angry and says he'll cover the cost to repair it as it was his choice not to have a protective cover, but I feel guilty and think I should contribute.

I'd apologize but it's always a risk at somewhere like a football match.

    Why I have a case.

As he said, he should have had a cover, and he may even have insurance that will cover it. It was an accident - I'd feel bad, but unless asked for money, I wouldn't cough up.

No. He has taken it on the chin, accepted his loss (which was his fault, as he said) I'd think nothing further about it. If you're totally guilt-ridden, perhaps do something nice for him/donate something to charity, but it seems like you've been lucky and he's been sensible about it, so be a bit more careful next time :)

Why is it the only threads I see set up by MSE staff in recent months are clearly manufactured. This isn't a serious question... it isn't genuine. Sorry but it really annoys me... I'm no expert on MSE but people come here for genuine comment and advice.

I'm bucking the emerging trend on this one by saying yes - I think you should contribute.
Through clumsiness, you broke somebody else's phone. You know it's your fault and that's why you feel bad and think you should contribute.
The only remaining question is, why are you asking other people to act as your moral compass? :-)
  • He should concentrate on watching the game live, not through a little screen. A phone, (esp. Apple products) is a fragile device.

Worst case 50/50 (without seeing what happened)

If you go to a football match expect to be jostled, even in a seat.

Do you have season tickets so you'll be sitting next to this person again? Or do you know them outside of football? If 'no' to either question, then this dilemma is irrelevant as it's too late to do anything even if you wanted to.

If 'yes' then I would offer again to go halves on the repair bill, and if he still refused, I would buy him a bottle of something, presented in a gift bag with a card saying sorry.
