But it says in the Highway Code there: " If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area. "
That's because there are 2 stop lines, the meaning being if you cannot stop safely for the first one then you must stop for the 2nd one, leaving you stranded in the cycle box.
I would say they don't know the detail of these new regs. This is what the London Taxi Driver Association told us regarding getting stranded in the box but yeah Pepipoo is the best place for this.

I was more commenting on the ridiculous over reaction.

I suppose the offence depends on whether there was an attempt to stop at the first line and the OP failed or whether the OP was "caught out" by the red light changing and found themselves in the cycle bit.

Good point Newbie-1980 I'll look into that point and also check if there is a camera situated there.

This seems to be purely an act of money grabbing from easy victims, drivers. With our soldiers being attacked and having their heads chopped off in the streets and the country on a high terror alert I just can't believe the police spending their time doing this. They have now forever lost a long time supporter. How to win friends and influence people. Not!

Not much they can do about it from here is there.

They obviously need to police our country.

Nope, you clearly have a valid point but it may be that his vehicle only proceeded over the first white line after the signal went red.

I think the point is that post #10 is a direct copy of post #7 (plus a quote) ... so credit is being attributed to the wrong poster for the point raised. ;)

Does that mean, and would the police suggest, that you had time to stop prior to the first white line?

It would be interesting to know how that (possibly clumsy) wording in the Highway Code relates to (hopefully clearer) wording in the Legislation.
  • The red light offence is to be moving across the line when the lights are on red. So two scenarios:

    1) Travelling at sufficient speed that it was not possible to stop safely on amber (and amber also means stop though many drivers don't think so) however, should come to a complete halt by the time the red light is displayed. If for some reason you are struggling to stop on amber, if you overshoot the first stop line you are entitled to go to the second stop line while the lights are displaying amber.

    2) Having stopped for a red light, you should not move while straddling (either) white line when the red light is displayed. If you overshoot the first line, do not creep forward to the second stop line.

It may well be the case that the driver was a bit casual about the stop line, treating it as a bit optional. The box is there to give space to cyclists who can enter it after the motorist has stopped, so the argument would be that you should not encroach on it as it interferes with cyclists being able to use it safely even if they haven't entered the box yet.

Also note that if there are cyclists in the box, motorists are required to give the cyclists time and space to set off.
