You're welcome. You have always had the means to clear your debts, by selling cars, watches, razors, pens etc. others haven't been so lucky.
If you continue to write personal details about your family, upbringing, inheritance, even if your father-in-law asked if Homer was Latin, you will always invite comment. I will not quote here but your own comments on other people's posts have been less than polite.
Stick to the subject " mortgage free wannabe"0 -
Hello,
Anybody can post resources on TES.co.uk, you don't have to be a qualified teacher. You could have a look and see what's out there in your subject and see if your stuff is comparable. Teach it.co.uk and zig zag also pay teachers for resources which they then sell on but not sure if they do music as it is not my subject. But worth s look if it means you can get paid for doing something you enjoy and are doing anyway.

Still thrifty though, after all these years:D0 -

I understand what you're saying about the focus being mortgage free but there are no rules that say all mse posters must have followed the same route or come from the same background. Many DFW people have ended up where they are by being profligate in the past and have family who influence them one way or another and ill health is also a common feature. The same is true of Alex.
Fortunately when Alex was spending big time, enough was on 'investments' which he's been able to sell to sort out his debts. He's also worked hard to get MrsK onside as she definitely wanted to carry on spending
So Alex's route may be different but that doesn't mean he has to keep quiet about why he's on here. Vive la difference!0 -
Alex, just a few little something's to consider.
You don't HAVE to be anything that your parents want you to be. You have never had to be once you became an adult. They may have thought and still think that you do but you don't, they are mistaken. The choice is yours. Whatever you decide to do, do it because you want to, not out of guilt, not out of duty, not out self-blame. Choose as much as you can out of love for those important, but you do have a right to do what YOU want to do, too. Do you actually know what Alex wants?
Also, do keep a little eye on both how you judge people (don't worry, we all do) and if you are missing the present while dwelling on the past and your possible future. I was born into a very working class, dysfunctional family who would have thought Homer was a Simpson. Through education in state schools and working to put myself through a good university (my family believed I should start work at 16 to support them, I had no support from them either emotionally or financially) I achieved an honours degree and went on to become a clinical psychologist. I had a great profession, was financially secure and all I could ever imagine wanting. I lived a very privileged life for a while and was part of a world that I thought was closed to me as a child. Then I became mentally ill and have been unable to work ever since, living on benefits with frequent hospital admissions over the years. But I did learn how it felt to be on both sides of the coin and I found wonderful things in both points of view.
I told you the above to try to show you both that you cannot judge a book by its cover, to coin a phrase, and also that you cannot predict the future. As a child/teenager you would have viewed me as very rough and ready with little opportunity to improve my lot, after my degree and a lot of self-education you would have viewed me as someone highly educated with perfect manners and self-confidence in any environment. I am not either, I am just me warts and all and now I'm as mad as a box of frogs to boot.:rotfl:
Alex, it really doesn't matter if someone doesn't know who Homer is, Mother Theresa probably didn't either! Who they are as a person is what is important. I met some wonderful people who had little education and money and some wonderful people who went to private schools and later to Oxford. If they were considerate, caring and we could laugh together they were my friends. Nothing else mattered.
All you can do is be the best you can be right now, the past is gone and we can only hope for the future we want. If your parents won't let the past go this is not your fault. It is their problem, you have control of your own future. Please keep it mind that you do have choice. There are so many opportunities out there, try to remember you hold the power to change things at any time. Even if you choose not to, it may empower you to remind yourself that it is possible. Try not to close doors before you have given yourself a chance to look at what's beyond them.
Please don't presume everything, people, life and even who you are right now is set in stone. Be the best that you can be for yourself and those dear to you. That is what counts. Oh, and give yourself a break. You are a nice guy. Truthfully.

Thank you, I will certainly look into this.2018 totals:
Savings £11,200
Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -
Finances update:
I had a rather expensive weekend, somehow managing to spend over £300 despite not doing an awful lot. Probably need to work on not spending so much.
On the plus side there's been £1,030 added to "savings" (that are likely to get spent at the end of the year:rotfl:).
2018 totals:
Savings £11,200
Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -
I have been absent from MSE to give me time to think about some of the things written above. All I want is for my son to not end up like me and a part of making that happen means I must set a good example with regard to my finances and to also teach him that money does not grow on trees.
Wavesandsmiles: I know I judge people for reasons that I should not, it's something I have been trying not to do. Unfortunately, I have wasted opportunities given to me and couldn't cope with others. As a result, I don't really know how to tolerate myself and find moving forward very difficult which no doubt affects the money situation negatively.
On the subject of money, I've nothing more to report on the savings since last time. Tomorrow, I'll add the usual £30 but no more.2018 totals:
Savings £11,200
Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -
Oh Gawd, Alex you weren't supposed to stay away for a few days! I feel bad now, sorry!
Edinburgher has a good point below, Alex. I did write a long reply saying what a good person you are, (and yes, you are!) but it likely isn't my place to comment and never has been so I have deleted it. I apologise for any offence caused, I never meant to do that. Keep going as you are, you are doing great and I shall be lurking and cheering you on!Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened - Anatole France

Hope you plan on joining us again soon Alex.
Unfortunately you have been a victim of your own honesty, I feel that some of the comments made have been completely over the top. Decided not to wade in to the 'debate' as I would just have come across as rude!
Sharing is a good thing and a bad thing (as I have found out during my years on the forum!)0 -

No need for you to feel bad and you have not caused any offense. Please feel free to contribute, you don't have to lurk.edinburgher wrote: »Hope you plan on joining us again soon Alex.

Thank you for the advice, I'd agree about sharing being a good and bad thing.2018 totals:
