I'm sorry if I caused offense, Newgirly explained what I meant much better than I did. I agree that the bank making someone homeless would be a devastating thing to happen to all concerned. I just meant that if the only option was either council property or private rented property, that wouldn't be the end of the world, and many people do this and are happy with their situation. It has only been a fairly recent phenomena that we all aspire to own our own homes, and the rest of Europe do not copy our aspirations.
Think I'd better stop typing in case I'm digging myself further into a hole

Hi Alex, I am not commenting on the issue of your parents paying your mortgage as I don't know the details and may well do the same for my kids if needed.
Cat clearly has personal experience with this and I am reading it as she came to the conclusion that her kids needed an happy mum not one who had worried/stressed herself into a situation that she became ill with depression. Millions of families are happily raised in private rented or social housing very successfully, and although repossetion and bankruptcy is a horrible situation to find yourself in, life still goes on to be blunt and you would be very unlikely to actually end up homeless and on the streets.
Don't tell yourself you are not going to set a savings target yet alex incase you won't reach it. It's only a few days into the new year, why not have a couple of weeks to just think it over, maybe set a different or lower target? You have achieved so much in 2015 both personally and financially it would be a shame to not give yourself the credit that you are capable of doing the same again.
We believe in you alex, so should you
Money is not the only reason I have problems with my mental health. I wish I could be a better, happier Dad for my son but at this moment in time, I can't. That has nothing to do with where we live.
I can't save another £11,000 this year, so therefore am not "capable of doing the same again".I'm sorry if I caused offense, Newgirly explained what I meant much better than I did. Cat, I'm not sure what you're trying to say, to be honest. If it's that my wife and I deserve to have had our home repossessed and be bringing our son up in a council house because I've been somewhat stupid with money in the past and for a short amount of time my wife was unable to work then worked part time for a while, then yes, I am quite offended.2018 totals:

Take care of yourself
Do what you can on every front. If you can't save £11k but you want to do something set a target of £1000. It's still doing well. Focus on anything you can do, no matter how small, not what you can't.
Sometimes I read other people's successes, failures, opinions that totally differ from mine but try to focus that underneath this we all have the common financial goals but will get to the in very different ways. Because it's different doesn't mean it's right or wrong it's just different.0
