I listed an engagement ring

Hi folks,
I started the 7 day ebay listing today at £750. Already I have 10 watchers. I knew it would be a popular ring.
I've also had messages asking me to sell them the ring.
1. Buyer with no history is offering me £2000
2. A jeweller is offering me £500
3. Another buyer offering me £800
This is the first and probably the last time I will list something so expensive and it's making me nervous.
Is there anything I can do to ensure the funds I (hope to) receive are genuine?

Offering £2000, But how are they going to pay? Will it be outside ebay/paypal and remove all your seller protection?
Make sure funds are cleared before sending and only send to the address given by ebay/paypal if thats what they use.
Cash on collection? Check the notes. Mate sold a vehicle and got some dodgy notes included.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
How much is the ring worth?

If I were you, and are feeling nervous about the whole process, let the auction run. These people are jumping in with early offers because they know it will actually sell very well.
Let the auction run out, accept payment by PayPal only (most protection for you), and of course when you post the item do so with a fully insured delivery. Royal Mail do full next day delivery with cover of up to £2500 for about £30. Definitely worth it.0 -
Thanks everyone.
I haven't had it valued but it was purchased for around £2,500.
I only accept paypal.
I offered free postage but admittedly didn't look into the cost of sending it fully insured. I didn't think it would cost as much as £30. I think i may now add a postage fee.
Yes, I'll let the auction run.Dave Ramsey Fan[/COLOR]0 -

Yes, I'll let the auction run.
If a bidder is going to pay potentially over 1000 pounds for a ring then they probably wouldn't appreciate any additional costs being added like the insured postage. I'd take the hit on this occasion.SPC7 ~ Member#390 ~ £432.45 declared :j

If
Let the auction run out, accept payment by PayPal only (most protection for you)
Paypal offers protection for buyers, not sellers.
I would say for an item of this (or any) value that Paypal offers the least amount of protection at it will enable 'empty envelope' fraud. 'item is a fake' fraud and lots of other ways the seller will lose the item and the money.
I would not sell this on Ebay and would not accept Paypal, this is a very hisk risk transaction and Paypal can and does enable fraudsters and will always side with 'buyers' even scammers 99.9% of the time.
I'd sell to a reputable jeweller off line.0 -
I am very concerned that some sellers think paypal is the safest payment method for a seller- I like paypal and defend it a great deal to the extent that I am often accused of working for them! However, do not fall for the hype that it is completely safe- in the wrong hands it can be a real problem.
OP, I am also concerned that you are selling a high end item on ebay without understanding how to protect yourself- I think you potentially risk being scammed. Please, before you do anything else read the sticky postage thread here

that explains about suitable postage methods. Incidentally your listing cannot be changed once you have bids- so if you have free postage shown then that is all you can do, the enhancements that you MUST have will need to be paid for by you.
Incidentally in case you have anyone wanting to collect just make sure you are familiar with the problems about that:

Personally the safest way of selling this is via a local jewellers who will pay you cash - no FVFs to pay (and remember the 10% fees and paypal fees on ebay) and no worrying for 180 days about a chargeback or buyer wanting a return.
If you do use paypal remember to follow the rules to get seller protection as outlined in the links above, then keep proof of postage and all your receipts for a full 180 days as that is how long a paypal claim can be made. As a new seller with a large payment it is also likely to be held for 21 days- however, you will still need to post it straight away- but be careful to ensure that the payment is live in your account, but just 'held' do not fall for any fake paypal emails .I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Good for you. Such a saint!
I really don't see your point at all.
The listing cannot be changed if there is already a bid- so OP cannot add an additional postage charge even if they wanted to - and cannot ask for more afterwards.
If auction has no bids then a change to postage costs can be made.
It's very simple to anyone who uses ebay.
Incidentally, assuming ring can be securely packaged within a 500g limit then special delivery insured for up to £1000 would only be £8.15, insured up to £2500 would be £10.15 . It would be less if under 100g but personally I wouldn't skimp on the packingI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. You don't know that items can be removed then relisted? That's a very simple concept for anyone who uses ebay. and it happens fairly regularly.0
