I am trying to find out from TT whether this £5 is on-going or just for a limited period ....

You're already paying £10 a month for the fibre service, the £5 a month difference is ongoing for the upgraded package. How fast will you get? Have a look at your router stats and you can estimate it from there...

ok, £10 subject to any other offers you are currently on... talk about pedantic...also if you're on a "deal" currently, you may or may not be eligible for further offers simultaneously

The irony is your probably not getting full speed as it is, so now they're going to somehow magically give you a little bit more?

They'd have you believe that your current speed is the best you can get, at least that's what they'd say if you phoned them........ But then they expect you to believe you can go faster if you upgrade?

They won't change anything, they won't actually make any physical changes to your connection, they won't send somebody out to put in a thicker (large) cable.

I dare say you'd get more bandwidth, but only because somebody somewhere changes a few numbers in the bandwidth limit box/field for your connection.

    It's all a bloody con.

Leave them now and never go back.

Right - so you reckon that by default - the line is LARGE (76Mbps) - so it is being artificially reduced in speed to 38Mbps (Medium) - so should be cheaper for Large than Medium ?

No, think of an aeroplane where space is limited. Want more legroom ? A first class ticket is extra as you are taking more space. It cost's them money to send your data over their backhaul, if you have a bigger pipe to your house it's potentially more data that has to be routed so this is reflected in the cost to you.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

I work in IT and talktalk has always been a no-go for problems and customer service , id suggest having a look at plusnet (my opinion anyway!)

While their reputation cannot be questioned ...

I was with them for 2+ years, never had a problem and when I needed customer service, I was connected quickly and they did what they promised quickly and efficiently.

They communicated efficiently throughout the process too.

Not really, as you are getting the speed of service that you wish to pay for.

Not everyone wants the fastest service possible, so because people pay for the lower bandwidth its easier for the ISP to manage bandwidth as not everyone is vying for the faster connection so there is less congestion..

There is no large, medium or small...... The physical connection is the same. So yes, effectively the ISP artificially limits the bandwidth.

But if your not getting the full bandwidth you already pay for, then that's not because of any physical limitation, all the ISP is doing is twisting your arm to go onto a bigger package where you'll get slightly more.

Whatever your doing, 38mbps is likely more than enough, any issues your experiencing are probably nothing to do with your bandwidth. ISPs know this and I strongly suspect they mess with customers connections to make them frustrated enough to move up to their premium internet packages.

I mean, lets take WiFi for example, most ISP provided routers connect WiFi at 54mbps, so the choke point becomes the WiFi, but they still peddle faster broadband speeds.

A lot of people believe their Youtube pausing/buffering/stuttering issues are down to bandwidth and upgrade their packages, but actually THIS is down to your ISP routing Youtube traffic through caching servers and can be fixed by blocking said servers in your routers config.

It's truly disgusting behaviour and I don't trust any of them quite frankly, once targets and KPI's creep into these organisations, customer service goes out of the window.

as has been said, it's the same cabling etc., the med/large refers to the amount of bandwidth you're buying from the ISP...

as a related topic, I'm with TT (formerly tiscali until the takeover) and have no probs with the fibre service - I'm on med, no requirement for faster up/down even with the kids (one always youtube/other streaming, one xbox live, plus sky downloads, normal internet use, etc. I sync at 40/2 meg, and where my DSLAM cab is I could, if I chose to pay for it, sync at 76meg.

The TT VDSL router is actually a pretty good performer (even though they've disabled telnet on it :( ), and the wifi N performance is very good so it wouldn't be a choke-point if I did upgrade..

I have to admit I was wary when TT took over, but I've been pleasantly surprised. My biggest issue these days is that, having been on LLU for many years with no DLM and setting my snrm myself, now being subject to BT's DLM (as are all fttc lines :( )
