is my tv dying?

am not sure if on right forum, if not could someone please nudge me along. basically have all the extras on my bedroom tv, sky, multiroom etc but it is a few years old and as an alba does not connect up to my amazon so am missing out on that. but as of last night the volume just went and when I switched it on this morning the sound returned, now it is a case of turning of and on again for sound to return but as morning has worn on the gaps between the off and on are getting smaller so I know it will just stop some time soon. dilemma is with the problem described does anyone know what it would cost roughly to get it repaired? or am I just delaying the inevitable? would I be best putting money towards a sumsung with all the bells and whistles for £300 or settle for another similar alba tv on argos for £100 approx.
I spend all of my time watching the bedroom one so don't know if I should factor that in too. head all over place help??

  • PERSONALLY unless the TV was a quality make and reasonably new, given the current low prices (comparatively) of new televisions I would not repair a TV nowadays.
In fact where we live, you would struggle to even find someone to repair a TV. :D
As for what you invest in ......... well, again MY OPINION ONLY if you spend lots of time watching this to-be-replaced TV I would get a decent-quality and avoid "cheapies".
May I suggest these if you have one nearby?

Personally if it were me Id also go for a new tv, just make sure which ever 1 you buy you check for reviews and you make sure it has the correct number of ports eg hdmi for all your devices.

And if you are going to go with Richer Sounds, join their news letter and they send you a £10 gift voucher and even with this, they will haggle.

Brilliant company, with great service and after sales service.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Or maybe just invest in a soundbar or speakers, will still be good to use in the future when the TV finally dies.

Would never recommend buying an Alba TV again though.
  • My Samsung died after 7 years. I am sure that someone who knows what to do with a soldering iron could have fixed it in a few minutes, but after investigating repair companies and failing to find anyone who would/could help, I got a Sony Bravia from Richer Sounds as people said good quality lasts longer.

thank you for all of your advice and think I will get a new one. richer sounds do seem to have a wide variety so will definitely go to them, now need to figure out what sort led, smart etc. feeling very old when I first set up home the only option you had was what rental group to hire one. didn't even know anyone that owned their own colour tv, never mind black & white

not only is my tv dying but it seems to be determined to send me round the bend first. hopefully there is still some hope for me? well as i said my sound just cuts off after watching for about 10 minutes. you turn it off for about 30 minutes and the cycle continues. so we decided to bring up a portable we had downstairs to test and it happened with that too and my ds1 who does all my tech thing said well as i pay almost £75 for sky then £10 for sky protect we should call them as it had to be a problem with sky, so he rang and went through all the usual push this and move that and they said it was definitely a sky problem and made app for 23 march. couldnt believe so long and angry with spending all this money and not having access. anyway in one of my genius moments :o i asked my son if its a sky problem and we have a tv with freeview , cant we take away sky box, just leaving the one box connected in front room and just watched normal tv that has just the freeview it should be no problem and i should have volume as they said tv was not the problem, but after watching for 10 mins the sound went again so now if possible am even more confused than before. is my problem with sky or my tv? please help a sad old woman who alone is lost without it

    | can't work out what you are telling us unless you punctuate your last post a bit more. Depends what you mean by 'Freeview'. If the TV sound fails when plugged into an aerial socket connected to an aerial, then it's not a Sky fault. If it fails when plugged into a Sky box plugged into a socket fed from your Sky dish, then it's either the TV, Sky box, cabling or dish. Impossible to know which without swapping out and testing. If you test with a known good TV then you can eliminate that easily enough, and you could borrow an old Sky box and swap that out too.
Suggest you cancel Sky Protect, as it's a complete waste of money. If you called Sky and said you wanted to cancel as you couldn't afford a £75 call out, they'd do it for nothing, as long as you are out of minimum term.
I would suspect a cabling fault, so try swapping out the HDMI or SCART leads. That would explain similar symptoms on two different TV's (if that is what you are saying).

Sounds like you have an old Sky+ box ? If so, its probably connected via SCART lead to TV - try changing the Scart cable before doing anythging else.
