if its on a fence facing , the only people it could affect are pedestrians , so if one stops to tie his shoelace he gets a ticket?

Something else has occurred to me. Is the Red Route official? I am not sure what it is called - but the council keeps a record of where their yellow lines are painted and are official. I assume this applies to a Red Route too.

VCS for example have painted yellow lines around a local private estate - these are not legal ones, and are ignored by "proper" traffic wardens.

It seems to me that VCS (or the airport) have made a Red Route - but not a council or legal red route - and this has not gone through the appropriate legal process - notices in the local newspaper etc.

If they are then signing this with official looking signs - and then "fining" people for stopping it is a clear case of fraud.

Let me put that a more obvious way. If there is an official red route then surely it should be patrolled officially.

They are just a sort of graffiti , nothing more. They have no legal basis.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

Then combined with the signs (IMHO) they are clearly fraudulent attempts to "fine" people.

correct , VCS are breaking the law , with the backing of JLA
  • Very useful information on the sizes and distances, thanks.

According to my DfT guidelines, with that width of road then for safety the sign should be at least 41m from the junction.

To be able to read the 1st 6 words, the sign should be 72m back from the junction, and the font 18.8cm.

Any font smaller than about 16cm is never readable by anyone with minimum legal eyesight.

So the 4cm parking charge info is about 4 times too small, and if that is the size of the capital letters, probably 6-8 times too small

This is exactly the same situation at Birmingham Airport and Acpoa. They have "red routes" as well.
