There has been a lot of talk during the week about the TV Licence (options for funding the BBC by subscription, by a German-style charge on every dwelling [part of the Council Tax] etc.
However, the "don't watch or record live TV programmes" get-out appears to be up for review - which suggests to me they're having increasing difficulty prosecuting people because they simply can't prove the necessary points and mere posession of a device which can be used to receive TV of whatever sort is going to be the criteria.
As an aside, I found the most intersting proposal was to stop MPs getting a free licence (no, I didn't know that was yet another of their plethora of perks either).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Why should an MP get a free TV licence?
Well i only read this because with no TopGear i really do not need a TV licence anymore.
I was close to cancelling it last year, but we started watching live TV again. But with no TG i will have to do something else now.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
When you purchase a TV or set top box, the seller (retailer) has to register your details with TVL so they can add you to their database.
If you are not already on it and registered as having a license, then this will generate a letter requesting that you go buy one.
The detector vans all have a list on their on-board computer of everyone in a given area that has not purchased a TV license.
If you use a random name and address and pay in cash, then you will never appear on their radar.Never Knowingly Understood.

Well I have taken the plunge after going through my finances and decided that as my teenager has now left home, there is no need. I work full time and when I get home am quite busy till late evening, the only thing I miss is the news and watch it on catch up b4 bed. It is surprising after 1 month, I do not know what is happening on coronation street, eastenders or emerdale and I dont care. If something dreadful or amazing happens in the world I find out by listening to the radio. Even if you dont cancel it is worth trying to live without it, the time you gain is massive. And if you pay by DD they actual take payments 5-6 months in advance so you get a £60 credit when you cancel. I have incapacitated my tv ariel so now cant watch if I wanted too.
Also I have received a letter from them saying they want to come round to see me about this. So far nothing, but I am sure they will get round to popping in.0 -
yup and they pay refunds out based on 3 mth increment's , do not expect your full £60 back0
