License needed ??

Just got renewal. I am watching more on-demand than before.

"If you only watch on-demand then you don't need a licence".

No doubt covered somewhere else, but can't find it. HOW do they know/can they prove, that you do not watch live tv, or stream films, etc ?? If someone knocked at the door, I do not have to let them in (do I ? they are not baliffs/entitled to enter).

My TV would be 'capable' of watching live TV at the press of a button. They only have my word that I don't. Is there really a detector van that wanders around and picks up a live TV signal being viewed ??

  • Disconnect your ariel or Sky and the wires into the room so that you're not tempted. As long as you don't watch any broadcast as it is being broadcasted or record any channel then you do not need a liscence.

You do not have to let them in or speak to them. They have no powers unlike bailiffs.

You can watch stuff your friends have recorded for you and watch stuff on demand, but not watch any stuff that is being streamed at the same time as it is being broadcast.

They can't. TV detector vans exist but simply contain a man with a camera and pair of binoculars.

If you take a picnic chair to Currys you wont even need to pay for the electricity.

This refers to, for example, going to iPlayer and clicking 'watch live' - that counts as 'live TV' and requires a TV Licence.

Well, that's not covered by the TV licence, that's copyright theft. movietube, whoever they are, almost certainly don't have the rights to show the film, the rights that the broadcasters have to pay.
Don't think that watching movietube is OK!

My local paper shows dozens of people having been fined. Wonder how/on what, they were caught...

The same way anyone gets caught doing anything, they admitted it.

    Plain and simple.

In essence, there is no way to prove or disprove, unless the "main in a van" has some sort of video footage if you watching live TV, which is highly unlikely.

The TV Licence fee is paid in good faith. Some people decide to flaunt that law and not pay.

You already know you don't need a licence, so it's a bit of a non-topic really... unless you do occasionally, or all the time, watch live TV and want a bit of reassurance you won't get caught...
