Of course, that was it! Thanks Softstuff. I remember now that I bought a packet of Sm@rtprice washing powder and soaked the spoons in a mug of hot water and some of the washing powder.
I think it was a tip in Good Housekeeping, which I used to subscribe to in those days.
The bicarb was for rubbing tea-stains off mugs.

:rotfl: That's cracked me up!
Lovely reading the posts about china. A friend gave me a dear little jug that had been her mother's. Her mother was our first friend when we moved here in 1983; she saw us moving in and asked if we needed anything; I said we were just going to go up to the Co-Op to get some milk for a cup of tea, and she had just come back from shopping and said "Here you are, have this!" - the milk she'd just bought!
I protested, but she insisted on giving it to us. What a lovely lady. My DS in particular was very fond of her. So the jug is a beautiful reminder of her. It was made between 1930 and 1945, and I use it to water the plants on my kitchen window ledge
Lyn :T re the damson tree!
Chickens ((HUGS)) I hope you find hubby feeling better when you see him tomorrow.
Stiltwalker You have been having a busy time! I hope things will be slightly more restful during the day now the new term has started.
I thought I'd caught a bad cold last night, but I'm a bit better this morning as far as sore throat and snuffles are concerned, so I think it's just hayfever. *rolls eyes* I've used my spray, but it hasn't done a lot.0 -
Camelot I'm another one longing for some decent warm weather. It's that bloody wind, it's murder. I'm going to buy my seed tatties this week and try and get them in before the end of the month.
I like pretty wee plates and jugs too, I get them when I'm in charity shops.0 -
Ye gods! I know I have been away too long when I do a bit of catching up and find you all colour co-ordinating your dust.
And Nursie has reared her bossy head again! She's been AWOL for so long that I thought she must have been radicalised and was now bombing (literally) her way round the Middle East somewhere, clad in a burka (burhka, burkha?) with a Kalashnikov tucked into her knickers. Listen up Nursie. I have MOVED and NOT left a forwarding address. PHEW!!!!!
Welcome Petula. They are as mad as a box of frogs on this thread but fortunately there are one or two of us who manage to maintain a modicum of sense, wisdom, dignity and decorum. You will soon learn to recognise us.
I'm slowly recovering after a noisy, hectic, chaotic weekend with my family. It was so good to see Mia again who is absolutely enchanting though one of the most determined two yearolds it has ever been my appalled pleasure to know. I do hope that I'm around when she is a teenager - it will be sweet revenge. DGS13 was also on good form and ate for England - probably because I took good care to make all his favourite food. He'd ordered chicken and ham pie so we had that for his first lunch here. He had a humungous piece of that with half a dozen roast potatoes, piles of carrots, broccoli, cauli and sweetcorn and then he finished Mia's. This was followed by profiteroles and chocolate sauce. He is tall now but the physique of a string bean. When we had finally waved our goodbyes the Rev and I dragged ourselves back indoors, sat down and went to sleep.
Now I have to tackle stripping beds and washing, not to mention a massive tidying and cleaning session. Such fun.

I can see it doesn't pay to be away from this thread for long! Will have to play catch-up this afternoon;) It has been lovey out the past couple of day so I've been pottering in the garden and a good amount of time spent sitting and daydreaming too :rotfl:
Right now I need some lunch and there's bacon in the fridge calling my name.0 -
Went to b&q for some wax but they didn't have any. Ended up with a plastic outside storage box that they were selling for £30, it has taken me the best part of an hour to put it together! The instructions are just pictures with arrows that say 'click', easier said than done, I'm exhausted!
Anyway this is to keep the compressed sawdust logs in for the new log burner that is being fitted later this week. I bought some logs at home bargains and had a better look round the new store, their veg is very cheap, a lovely savoy cabbage for 39p and carrots at 39p for a kilo bag.
Going to get the washing in in a minute as I think it's going to rain, it should be almost dry as it's very windy, in fact the wind would cut you in 2!0 -
I have found out where all the black dust came from. The boiler is in what was the airing cupboard and it appears to be having falls of soot every few hours. Is this dangerous as it is only three months since it was serviced? There is an agent coming in the next few days to inspect the house for the new landlord so I will be able to tell him/her if it will wait.
I did not intend starting a conversation on dust it was just a joke as people always seem to be decluttering. I gave the bathroom a spring clean on Saturday but it was no better this morning as as well as the soot DSs hair is everywhere again.0 -
NurseMaggie, I've been told that black soot can be harmless, but it can also be an indication of carbon monoxide. Given it was recently serviced that seems unlikely, but I'd get it checked out as soon as you can, just to be safe. It really may be nothing, but I wouldn't risk it. Do you have a carbon monoxide detector?0
-
No we don't have one I don't have access to the right kind of shops to buy one. I will have to make the expensive phone call to the agents then.
Thanks FPK.0 -
