The Garden Fence - help and support in tough times

Hi GINNY in theory, yes. Our bushes came from a friend a couple of years ago who has an established bush in the garden and finds that the squirrels 'plant' spare nuts in the autumn by burying them in the ground and quote' the whole garden looks like a baby forest come Spring!'...usually accompanied by an observation on the squirrels legitimacy and size!!! Ours are still small and we haven't had catkins on them yet but I have hopes of a harvest in a few years time.0

((HUGS)) Ginnyknit, so glad you're all right and feeling better now. I went to the GP last year because I kept losing my balance when I got up to the loo in the night, and often felt light-headed - I'd assumed it was an ear problem, but the first thing he did was to take my BP, and it was astonishingly high :eek:0
-
Ginny - huge hugs to you - hope you're taking it easy.
Mr LW - So sorry to read about Docky, must be a huge change in your daily life not to have him around x"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
Blood pressure issues can be scary and cause loads of issues. Glad that's being sorted out and no damage seemingly caused.
My garden  was much worse than this when I started. Getting there slowly (taking my time)with help it would be done by now. It will look better when the lawn is greener and weeds/moss killed off/removed. And I keep on top of it.
That includes removing the Ivy on the fence and the ivy that has spread over the lawn on the right. A lot of what you can see now is rubbish that needs bagging but by leaving it is it is dying down. Most work is now at the back of the garden but there are hornets that dislike me getting too close. They give me a buzz now and again.
Don't know whether to wait until they leave or make them go earlier...it is nature. Those frogs are still in the garden but losing their protection and moisture as I cut the grass etc...
Top right there is a rockery to clear and more "Stuff" down the bottom right. There is/was a border on the left but grass has grown over it. I started to clear it but perhaps I should let the lawn go up to the fence. Stop removing the grass but it is getting rid of weeds etc... Letting the lawn grow aves digging it over.
I'm also clearing the path that breaks up the lawn too. Thinking of adding flower tubs/bulbs that come out annually at different times. I already have snowdrops/tulips and daffodils that come out at various times of the year. I had trees removed last year by the council which will not be replaced.
I'm not doing the garden today though. A quick tidy of the house(landing/dining room)a shave, a change of shirt and then I have been invited to my friend's for fish and chips for 3pm.
Tonight its a charity night at the music club to help raise money for the ward that looked after him when he was in hospital. We have £800 already and by the end of tonight we may have £1,000
Tomorrow they come to replace two windows(double glazing)that have condensation between the panes of glass.

Afternoon all,
Madly still preparing for London. Not helped by feeling a bit under the weather at the moment, but oh well.
OH is playing football tonight after tea so I'll try to get a bit more done then. He'll have leftover broccoli/bleu cheese pasta bake and I'll have a salad and some tuna for tea. Just having a slice of cheese and some water biscuits now.
Pops your efforts are really showing. I'd probably leave the hornets, but that is just me. I'm sad for the frogs, but not too sad. Little beasts have a habit of jumping out and startling me. I'd be more than happy to have them if they'd give a girl a warning!
Ginny, Congratulations on the granddaughter! Hopefully you're enjoying some of this nice weather we're having! I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.
Hugs to all who need them.x0 -
Pops - your garden looks a good size. Just a thought - would it be possible for someone to use it as an 'allotment'A friend of mine uses a neighbours garden because she can't manage it and he plants the veg & shares it with her in return. A win for both of them. I'd steer clear of the hornets at the moment - they'll probably disappear by September but their stings are horrendous!! You could always leave a clump of grass in a shady corner for the frogs - they're so good for the garden, eating the slugs etc & harmless little chappiesSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

Yay! it didn't rain. So windows replaced within 15 mins and completed by 9.45am.:)And I was able get out in the jungle again and this time cleared all the ivy from the fence panels. Sadly some are damaged but I think that I can make them last a while longer if I paint them and the ivy on the other side will help support them.
I will have to watch for it growing again and cut it back when it starts to grow again, which it will but I can't do anything about what happens in another garden.
Lots of rubbish to bag and that will make a difference too:TTo complete my exciting day I had a washing day.:pI have tumble drier but if I stay here I think I may set up a washing line again so clothes can be dried outside. Cheaper but then again the amount of time I need to wash/dry a full load of clothes, I doubt it would make much difference.
More expense today, I wasn't in debt but was not as far ahead as I thought with my rent(I like to be a month ahead at least)
I wanted to go to a show tonight in a neighbouring town, I like the act but though the ticket price isn't bad if the show finish at the usual time I miss the last bus home.
Then its a taxi(£15)or trying to get another bus to take me to another town and hope I connect with another one coming here again. If I fail I'm stuck again. So I haven't bothered. I feel better relaxing, still quite happy.
What I might've spent has been directed to a shopping trip buying nice food. Some essentials and I treated myself to...an Ambi Pur electric defussier. I had 4 boxes of refills but didn't know where the plug for it was and I haven't used it since Mum died.
I thought it may be expensive to run(but I don't think it is)Its 2.5watts. They now do a variety suitable for bedrooms. A well known store has them on offer. The plug is half price and so are the refills. So I purchased a bedroom variety and the plug. Paid £4.50 instead of £9. Supposed to last for 90 days at minimum setting for twelve hours daily.
I don't have a strong sense of smell but hopefully may smell these. If nothing else should anyone visit it will smell "nice"
I would go back into the garden as it seems quite a nice night but I think I'll leave it. Feeling the effect of cutting the ivy with those long handled lop(?)cutters.
Silvasava some good ideas there. I could leave one little corner a bit wild perhaps. Perhaps the sharing a garden is another option. Not ruling that idea out.

You're doing a grand job there Popperwell, maybe you could get a couple of packets of wild flower seeds for the end of the garden, a lovely splash of colour.
Had a roller coaster of emotions today, DD bought a flat so will be leaving home in a couple of months (she's the youngest and last to leave). Really pleased that she has got the flat she wanted and quite excited for her.
Sadness as a good family friend has passed away, him and his wife have been fantastic friends over the years, especially since my DH died, he's always been around for advice and help. I feel a little numb, he has been ill but seemed to be ok. Such a shock for all.
Anyway, I have eaten chocolate and biscuits to compensate, need to run a marathon tomorrow!0 -
camelot1001 Firstly, I am sorry to hear the loss of your friend:(Tea and biscuits seem to go together...we're looking for comfort I guess. Its never good. Whether we know its coming or happens suddenly. Perhaps only for the person themselves.
I've been very good and avoided sweets/biscuits/cakes in generaland usually have tea/coffee without any extras but I have thought why deny myself so I have purchased some and I can see them as I speak. Funnily enough, sometimes I crave them less when they are in the house and know I can have them whenever I wish.
I like the idea of perhaps having a wild area in the garden. If I thought the ivy would not take over again getting mixed in with it(or I give it a while to see that it doesn't)and I have painted the back fence a kind of wild/cottage area at the back could work quite well. Good for bees/butterflies too.
I've been promised some lavender too for next year. Typically, now that I have done the garden myself and surprised even me:ppeople have started coming forward offering help or telling me they have friends/family that do garden work(I don't know if they do it on the quiet or are genuine)if its done well(ish)and we all benefit I'll be honest I don't mind. We all win. But if I remain here and keep on top of it now, its OK. Could be worth knowing if I took ill suddenly, when I am older or I let it go again but that's not the plan.
The air freshener works, I can smell it and its not overpowering. I nearly left it on overnight to "Soothe" mebut I switched it off after an hour and the fraqrance stayed around awhile longer. They say it lasts 90 days at minimum setting so if I use it 6-8 hours that will be even longer.
Dare I say that I have slept in and long today, thinking of keeping it that way. I would not get much done now as I have a meal to cook, then its bingo night so I am out reasonably early. So I will return to household tasks/garden tomorrow if it stays fine. I'm finally pacing myself.
If I'm up to it on Saturday I may head out early and have a day out at the Tanfield Railway(they have an event taking place)but by bus it takes almost two hours to get there(the same back)but you get the scenery to watch passing by. Its somewhere I don't get too that often. To be honest its only my second visit but they do not do many events on a Saturday/weekdays and again Sundays are not great because of the Sunday buses.
I know some don't believe in vitamins/minerals and they can be expensive(Its said if you eat well you'll get what you need from your food)but I do take a few and they don't seem to do any harm.
And once purchased we're only taking of perhaps 50p per day if that. I have omega 3+6+9, Lycopene, garlic, cranberry, cherry and a vitamin/mineral tablet that also has ginkgo biloba and ginseng amongst its ingredients."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Gosh it's hot here today, 25+ degrees and very little breeze either. We've just got back from a walk across the common and nearly fried when we came out of the trees into the open, just consuming a cuppa which strangely enough makes you feel refreshed even when it is baking!!! Keep bumping into people who ask where the hound is? I hope word gets round quickly, it's still not easy explaining we've not got him any longer. Folks are always so kind and sympathetic but on the emotional stakes it's one step forward and two steps back every time. Still everyone else loved him too so they're bound to ask aren't they? and I guess that's nice in itself too!!!0
