St Giles in Edinburgh is free, you can walk in and around while they're having services :)

Except when there'a a wedding - we were at one in St Giles last year and some disgruntled American tourists were whinging outside when we came out, they had wanted to come in to watch the bride be piped in.

That was a bit cheeky of them - to expect to "cash in" on someone else's wedding for a bit of "local colour"...

My own view re paying to go into attractions tends to be along the lines of "locals" should be able to get in for free, but tourists should be charged.

I do see that it's not fair to expect any taxes money/Council Tax money/etc to be used for the upkeep of "local attractions" and its basically down to users in the main.....as there is only so much public money available for everything and needs have to come before luxuries when there isn't enough cash to go round.

I agree with your comments re admission charges, whilst I appreciate that these places need to be maintained, they are ours, part of our history and heritage and should be easily accessible to all.

Lindisfarne charge around £4 to park, £1.50 if you want to get the bus to the castle, £7.50 ish to get into the castle and around £6 to go into the priory (which is really just a pile of stones and grass). Add on to that the extortionate prices of lunch and it is a very expensive day out. All the meals seemed to be about £3-4 more than on the mainland.

On saying that I did enjoy it but didn't find it to be the spiritual place so many say it is. Oh yes, and I bought 2 framed prints from a gallery!

The weather here has been awful, so cold and wet. Apparently it's to be nicer tomorrow so better get some washing on ready.

Personally I think high admission charges means that many sites end up only being available to an elite few. I think as a society it is our job to preserve our history and heritage sites and I tend to think the burden is less if it is spread across more people. I actually think it is fairer to raise tax revenue ensuring all have access to sites and that as a society we collectively bear the financial burden of preserving our history, but raising taxes hasn't been a popular political strategy for several decades now.

I've already got washing on--it feels like we've got mountains of it just waiting for the rain to stop. One of my courgettes is definitely dead--a combination of hail and slugs and the like. The other looks very poorly but might rally yet.

I've a busy day today--returning a very heavy bag of 15 books to Uni, meeting a colleague for a lunch meeting and then a haircut at the training academy this afternoon. It does take a long time there and can only be done on certain days of the week, but £6 is unbeatable and I won't look too scruffy at my conference later this month. I'm going to try to head to the gym this morning and then it is Salmon with a red onion wholegrain mustard sauce, roasted new pots, green beans and salad for tea. I'll try to work in reading and editing a paper while I wait for things today.

So many of you have busy and interesting lives, if I was younger:oI'm feeling somewhat better since my birthday. I know I am doing well when I enjoy music, a bit of TV(again)and can think of food again. I'm being a bit adventurous adding relish/dressings/chutney's to snacks too. Still can't get away with spices if they are too hot though.

    Sleeping better too.:D

Discovered a free Proms concert in a park in the neighbouring town of Darlington(7miles away)at the end of June(I saw it in 2013)missed it last year but hope to see it this year if its not cold, windy and raining.

Unfortunately they've chosen a Sunday 6pm-9pm and without a car the buses are bad, some routes there is nothing in the evening and for me one bus an hour so I will have to hang around for 75 mins after the concert...or get a taxi but that adds £15 to the night but I might give in. Sometimes you have to.

Other nights during the week would be better or even on a Saturday. Sundays are always bad.

If I put some money aside between now and the end of the month I may not miss it or as I won't be with my friends at the bingo that night I can perhaps redirect money from one event to the other. Be a pity to miss it.

Not spending but thinking of having a bus ride later this afternoon. It will fill a couple of hours.

I thought I'd won £2.80 on the Euromillions lottery last Friday(checking it online)but the machine in the shop said that I hadn't:(Glad it was only such a small amount I lost out on.

It's been interesting reading the comments about admission charges for our heritage. I feel happier paying the charges for places in York as most tickets give you a year's admission. As we don't live too far away, this is good for us, but not good for the once only visitor. For £10 though you can visit the undercroft as well as the main cathedral.

Where I baulk at admission charges are places like the sea life centre, where you can get round in about 10 minutes and it costs a fortune.

Having a quiet day here so far today. I have had a headache since last night, so apart from taking the dogs for a walk to see if the fresh air would help (it didn't) I've spent most of the day in bed.
Spend less now, work less later.

I went around a Sealife place to please a friend and I felt like a sardine with so little room, so many people in the venue. Could've done the tour in minutes as said.

I've purchased a cheap Bosch grass strimmer and even with the warranty its only cost approx. £30 but if it keeps the grass down that's fine by me. I may just about manage a strimmer as opposed to a mower with my mobility issues and will pace myself.

I'll probably have to spend more on a cable extension for the back garden. Be OK once I get on top of the work and don't allow it to get out of hand again. I'm not much of an expert.

I'm tired now after my trip so will take it easy for the rest of the night.

We're going up north for a couple of days next week, and I priced the gondola up to the summit at the Nevis Range ski resort... £24 for two of us. And no doubt the restaurant at the top will be equally dear.
We'll just park the car at the bottom and watch it lol
