Just brought a flat with NPower pre payment meter, and they want us to wait 12 months and charge £60 to have it change so I think i will be changing supplier and getting the new to change it over.0

Have you tried offering a returnable deposit?
You might have exactly the same problem wth other companies, unless you have a good history with a particular company.
You are effectively asking for credit of several hundred pounds.0 -
BG gas changed my prepayment meters. I must admit i ran up a dept(old flat ran off without paying) so got Scottish power to switch to key meters to pay off debt pays off debt with a month. They wanted to charge £100 a meter i said no thanks. BG after a credit check nicely switched the meters for me with no charge.0

Just Moved Into A New Flat An It Has Prepayment Meter Called British Gas As They Were Previous Tenents Supplier Told Them I Would Use Them But Wanted It Changed To A Normal Meter They Did A Credit Check Wasn't Able To Get One Changed For For Free Would Have To Put Down A Returnable Deposit Of £500 For Gas & Electricity Told Them Dont Have That Kind Of Money!! So Stuck It Out & Got Told By Family Friend It's £10 A Week For Each Of Them To Run So Monthly Would Be £80 How Can That Possibly Be Cheapest Deal?!!:mad::mad:

Just called EDF after being in and using their PPM card/Key for gas/elec since February to arrange an appointment for PPMs to be removed as per contracted promise (& the only reason I went with them: free removal of the meters) and they can only take the electric as Gas has not gone 'live' yet. Eh? I've been paying them on the PPM card since Feb!
Blooming idiots: I now have to take 2 days off work for something they should have done in March.
So before listening to their ''yes, use our PPM card/key for 4 weeks and we'll take the meters away FOC'' promise, bear in mind it takes ages for them to answer the 'phone (typically 30 mins+) they won't have the paperwork ready in any case, and they then have a long waiting list (my appointment now the end of May).
As soon as my 'lock in' period is over I shall go back to SE I think!Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

Hi,
I just bought a flat to rent out with a prepayment meter for the gas but direct debit for the electricity and have been quoted £32.00 to have it changed by Scottish Hydro, so they do charge too. I have a good credit rating and they advised everyone has to pay the charge. I will be changing to my home supplier at the earliest opportunity once I have confirmed they don't charge.
I think it is terrible that all these service providers are allowed to charge so much more for the gas/electricity via a prepayment meter.
I have to be honest and say that I didn't know that prepayment meters were such a rip off.0 -

Welcome to the forum.
Actually whilst it was a fact that pre-payment tariffs used to be much more expensive, the differential between pre-payment tariffs and other tariffs has now reduced considerably with most companies.0
