Just wanted to share my experience- hence the vent. I know about the interminable supermarket threads, so before I start I just want to make clear it's purely a cautionary tale- I'm not trolling and neither am I out for anything.
Today OH and I did our weekly shop at Asda as we do every Saturday. The only different things we bought were a belt and some other bits from George which totalled £22. we then did our food shopping and took it to the till. I did notice something at one stage which I was a little suspicious of- the cashier stopped, pressed total, took the receipt out and put it in her pocket, then started up scanning again. She didn't press anything different, didn't notify a colleague or anything. Just started scanning again.
Imagine our surprise when it came to £177 which was way more than we were expecting. OH got angry and started kicking off at me saying I had spent too much although I was very surprised as I honestly thought I hadn't gone overboard. (*i might also add, OH has very severe mental health issues so he gets more angry than a reasonable person would which he has little control over) I noticed as well the cashier's behaviour had been a bit odd- more interested in talking to her colleague on the next till (although to be fair that's not unusual these days) and even at one point wandering round the till looking at the floor.
Upon checking the receipt, I see that we've been charged £56 for some reduced raspberries that should have been £2.36! So I took it to the customer service, who checked the receipt and said the code on the receipt wasn't even anything like the correct code- and when she scanned the raspberries they came up correctly. I commented on her stopping, taking the receipt and pocketing it and she said that was very concerning- she sent her colleague straight away to remove her from till duty and said she would be interviewed. We got an immediate refund to the card, an apology and were given the raspberries for free which we were both satisfied with.
I'm not accusing anyone, I'm not saying she did it deliberately (although I'm sure the possibility may be investigated) but all I am saying is check your receipts as these big howlers do happen!

I'm not sure why you still paid when you were so sure that the total was wrong? :-/

Because we don't like to hold people up. how many times have you been in a queue and there's been a stewards inquiry at the checkout.
We had an issue at M&S, dine for £10 wasn't taken off, went to customer services and was sorted without stress or drama.0 -

£177 for a weekly shop?! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
And you didn't question it at the till?
Can't understand either why you didn't just refuse to pay.
To heck with 'holding up the queue.'
I am not sure what you are suggesting that the cashier was up to.
But I do agree that it's important to check receipts before you leave the store.
I actually tot up the amount as I am going around the store. Fairly easy as me and DH spend around £20 each time. (We usually do 2 sets of shopping in 2 different shops, and a mini shop in a third shop, totalling £55 ish for the week.)0 -

'hieveryone' asked the OP (mrs_ryan) the question, and you (adonis) answered it as if it was mrs_ryan answering.
Are you logged in under 2 different names? You appear to have answered hieveryone's question as if you are mrs_ryan, but under a different name.0 -
If my bill came to £177 when I wasn't expecting anything like that, I wouldn't really care about holding anyone up behind me, to be honest.
I would politely apologise and explain that something was amiss with my bill - no big deal.

Yeah I do that sometimes. Pushed the wrong button and things just happen innit. :rotfl:0 -
Shame it wasn't Tesco, double the difference on that would have been worth having0

Even without the mistake it would have come to around £123 so presumably OP is used to large payments.0 -
No there's only one me. My partner paid because he thought I had just overspent in selecting the weekly shop but I was fairly sure that it was wrong. And yes I suppose it's an element of not wanting to hold up the line. My partner actually said to the cashier you are joking aren't you? She just repeated the total so we assumed it was right and lo and behold when we checked the receipt there it was.
I'm not entirely sure what went off- but Customer Services were puzzled where the code for the £56 came from as they actually said scanning it brought up the correct code and displayed £2.36- the correct price. We got our money back though like I say. And yes ThumbRemote is correct. Our weekly shop is usually around the £100-110 mark. We knew it would be a little more this week as we'd bought a couple of things from the clothing section which came to about £22 so we expected around £130 at the most- certainly not £177!!*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -
If the checkout operator had charged me wrong, she would be off her rrrrrrr putting the items back in the shelf. And the queue. Hoot hoot.0
