Kwik Fit - quote for work too high?

I have heard that it's legal to drive your car with an expired MOT as long as you are on your way to have it tested - is this true? I wouldn't want to get stopped!
Yes, it is - so long as the MOT's pre-booked. But I really wouldn't worry too much about an MOT that's a day or two expired. And lastly, should this new test show that the car does not fail on the brake pipes, what should I do about the Kwik Fit assessment? Pay the fee for the MOT and move on, complain directly to them or is there somebody else I could speak to?
You can either appeal to VOSA - https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/problems-with-your-test-result - or complain to KF. If you appeal to VOSA, do it now - and don't do anything until the car's been inspected by them. If you complain to KF, get a second opinion first, because then you KNOW that it isn't a genuine issue.
Balancing the hassle factor against the financial loss to date? I'd just get on with life. KF have £30 of yours, and you don't know for sure (yet) that it's not a genuine issue.Likewise, if it does pass this time around (or at least not fail on brake pipes), is this likely to be because the new garage have missed it or that Kwik Fit are trying to make a quick buck?
If you trust the new garage, ask them specifically. Manky brake pipes are a bad thing.0 -
Quick update for you all:
Turns out Kwik Fit were on on the ball and my car does need brake pipes replaced. The other garage has quote me £310 for the brake pipes to be done, not mentioning brake fluid replacement or the front bushes. They have said my wipers need replacing which Kwik Fit did not pick up on. This is a decent garage but they can't fit me in until Monday where as Kwik Fit can get me in now. I really need my car for Friday and the MOT has expired. The quote they gave me seems incredibly fair in retrospect.
Any suggestions?0 -
Did you mention the brake pipes to the other garage before they took a look? (If you pre-conditioned them then it's not too surprising if they found they needed doing). If you didn't then fair enough.
I'd still be cautious about using KF ... once they start working they may well find "other" things that "really need" doing.0 -
I've no idea, but when your car fails an MOT its on the computer, so when you take it to a different MOT station then surely then know it failed last week on xyz?0

As we said the "price" is not the issue, it is they have a reputation for finding further problems along the way.
You might get lucky if they are very busy and the duck oil has run out for the shock absorbersI do Contracts, all day every day.0 -

But if, as a tester you see the brake pipes have 'some' corrosion on them, they were borderline pass/fail, and you would normally have passed them, but another tester has already failed them would you run the risk of the original mot being appealed and it going to vosa and the vosa inspector agreeing with the original tester and taking action against you.
Rightly or wrongly I think on a borderline call i'd follow the original tester.0 -
you don't check any previous mots that may have been done, why would you?0
