Kwik Fit - quote for work too high?

I can't speak for the rest of their customers but my reasons were to do with convenience (and being an idiot).
I am gutted having to pay £30 for the actual test.
Katie, Katie, Katie, you have done something we have all done in out lives, took a chance on something, we know better, in the vain hope that the experience will be alright this time.
Don't worry about the £30, don't think of it as down the drain (it will eat away at you), think of it as buying valuable experience very cheaply, that hopefully you will be able to use over and over again in your life.
Before you came here, you knew the answer, we are only confirming it to you. As others have said, take it elsewhere, you probably are being over charged (I say probably, only because I haven't looked under the bonnet myself) and worse, you are relying on these people to do the work, but also not to find another thing that needs doing.
I had my car MOT'd this week, a local garage does it. Always passes and no advisories. Booked online, costs £45, for the sake of £17 saving, it makes me smile, as I drive past National Tyres, doing V signs, to the branch manager who failed me on a windscreen wiper (that I'd checked beforehand) three years ago, and told me in a day and a half, if I replaced it myself, he might not have time to check it and sign off the retest pass.0 -

I know, I know!! You speak perfect sense...it saddens me to think I had such an awful lapse of judgement.
"It's close to work", I thought!
"It's only £30", I thought!
"They're a multi-million pound company...I have something to fall back on if they don't do a good job" I thought.
Yet I know how awful they are, how much of a mark up they put on all work and how unreliable they are known to be.
I put it all down to stupidly leaving it until the last minute and panic booking an MOT. I knew I should have had it tested a few weeks ago in a more reputable garage but just put it off, because that's what I do.
First thing tomorrow I will look into booking it into another centre and getting a second opinion. Any recommendations around the Rotherham/Sheffield area? How does one find a reliable garage?!
Thank you for that internet-based slap in the face though...I was almost going to throw in the towel and pay the £450 tomorrow!0 -
Thank you for your input.
The quote includes the following -- CHECK AND FRONT ADJUST - £35.00
- ANTI-ROLL BAR BUSH £51.77
- MOT TESTING £30
- BRAKE PIPE (PER FEET) £250
- BRAKE FLUID RENEW £33.96
- ANTI-ROLL BAR BUSH £77.60
TOTAL £478.33 INCLUDING DISCOUNT OF £43.77
They then knocked it down to £450. The prices are different due to the discount applied I believe (bar bush is mentioned twice with different prices).
I've done a lot of googling and some websites mention getting the brake pipes done for about £200.
My car is in very good nick for its age, has always been serviced. I'm struggling to understand how the pipes can be so badly corroded after so few miles (although perhaps I'm unlucky).
I have owned many cars, many of which have been older than my Mini (and perhaps not considered as "premium") and I've never had this issue either. The bushes I completely accept as I don't think they've been done before judging by my paperwork and given the age of the car. I'm just a bit worried that they saw me coming a mile off with the brake pipes. What made me think this more is that he did the standard "Oooh, not good..." when reviewing the MOT paper and then proceeded to tell me they would normally charge £40 a foot for the pipe and my car required about 12 feet, which would mean over £500 plus labour. Then he knocked it down to £250!!
umm , http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-16-X-25-FT-SOFT-22G-COPPER-BRAKE-PIPE-10-NUTS-/320933174545?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4ab91b9d11
£8.99 per 25ft , yes we know you have to flare the ends , but asking £250 is taking the micky0 -
if it were me I would book Sheffield council mot centre

Thank you very much for this
I do have one more question - if I take it to the MOT centre in Sheffield, will they be able to see the failed MOT test on a system? If this is the case, are they likely to just agree with the original diagnosis?0 -
they are more likely to slag krook fit off and laugh.
get an honest MOT from them , they don,t make money by doing repairs , so have nothing to gain by making faults up
I guarantee that the report back from them will be different than krook fit0 -
A Pair of anti roll bar bushes for a mini of this age are about £10 looking online (brand new ebay, and also motor factor websites about the same)
I got a 1 litre bottle of brake fluid in Tesco today for £3.0 -
the only problem you may have with using council centre is getting car booked in straight away0
