Sainsbury's on line carrier bag charge

Used Sainsbury's on line service for the first time today for an elderly handicapped neighbour.
She was charged for EIGHT carrier bags at 5p each and yet all her shopping was delivered in just ONE.
Surely this cannot be right that they are charging customers for something they did not receive?
Will not be using Sainsbury's on line again - Tesco delivers in reusable boxes and not sure why Sainsbury's cannot do the same

Is there not an option for how shopping is paccked/delivered? (I know ASDA offer an option for bags/no bags, and bags are charged at a flat rate [maybe 6 bags - 30p - or something]).

No, it's not right, but I expect it's an innocent mistake.

I imagine they estimate (fairly crudely, apparently), the number of bags needed and, if you buy a lot of small, light, items, they will fit into far fewer bags than estimated.

Tesco don't charge, but give you some clubcard points if you opt for bag free delivery. For me it's a toss up, as I don't want to keep the driver waiting while I unpack the crates - so if I think I can safely tip most of it out onto the floor before stashing I go bagless, otherwise I ask for bags.

I realise this is a money saving site but it's 40p! Sainsburies are more expensive than tesco, asda and morrisons so if money is that tight shop at one of the other three!

"Ireland or Scottish address will incur a flat rate carrier bag charge of 40p per delivery. We do not offer a delivery option which does not make use of carrier bags and the 40p charge will be added automatically to your basket. It is not possible to opt out of this charge. The carrier bag charge is not a Sainsbury’s initiative. "

The Scottish Government also introduced a 5p charge of single use carrier bags in October 2014.

Sainsbury’s donates the net proceeds from the carrier bag levy to its Welsh and Scottish Community Grant funds."

Oh, but they do. 35p regardless of number.

They may not charge where YOU live, but to simply state that they don't is misleading.

Ill have to check my receipt from last week as I didn't see any carrier bag charge nor on the website when I checked out. is this new?

Charging in Scotland came into force on 20th October 2014. Online supermarkets updated their policies for Scottish customers on or shortly thereafter that date. (I remember this being very clear for ASDA online grocery shopping).
