think a bit more pricey by about 50 pence but the taste is wonderful - no comparing!been dairy free for a while and not a fan of soya products (avoid soya cheese like the plague its vile!!). Chiller cabinet of Holland and Barrett health food shop good place to start and staff should be able to advise too...
i tend to head for the aisle in tesco marked "organics" (usually around the tea / cereals / suash aisles as it sells not just organics but wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy free and combinations of all three. Caramel flavoured alpro soya desserts are yummy and would recommend them even to the lucky lactose tolerent!
lactofree milk works for me and still has the same amount of calcium as normal semi-skimmed milk.
finding a cheese substitute was the most painful process for me but my salvation was feta cheese - made from sheep's milk, really tasty and if you buy tesco own brand cheaper than normal cheese.
fruit flavoured sorbet good replacement for ice-cream but be careful some flavours have lactose in and some don't - for what reason god only knows!!!
biggest worry is lack of calcium don't want crumbly bones b4 i'm 30 but i am assured that more calcium in leafy green veg - spinach especially.
hope any of this is helpful!!!0 -
I have an intolerance to milk and it really gets me down, my problem being that I cant stick to avoiding everything that seems to have some form of milk in it, I love cheese, yoghurt for example though I do have rice milk in tea and on cereals and now much prefer it to normal milk (can't so soya milk either that makes me ill). I find that free from food is so expensive, so I end up eating stuff I shouldn't I am usually ok for a few months then suddenly I will have a bout of what resembles food poisoning it is as if my body gets too toxic and has to get rid of everything. What tips do you use to stick to your diet?0

Hi victoriaplum 1 - I too have been dairy intolerant for 15 years but manage quite well with soya milk. Swedish glace icecream is lovely. Morrisons soya milk with calcium is the best one I've tried. Also provided I eat vegetarian cheese I'm ok but not when it's used in cooking as it reverts back to ordinary cheese. Also do read the labels, it's surprising just how many things DON'T have dairy in them. Tesco's Finest half choc/ginger cookies, gorgeous. Aldi has a lovely low fat tea bread - almost like a christmas cake. Takes a bit of time I know reading labels but it's worth it. For special occasions when I can't avoid dairy - when I go out for a meal - I chew a couple of MilkAid tablets which are specially for people who cannot have dairy products - www.milkaid.com - I don't make a habit of doing this as I don't want to rely on them too much. Hope this helps, I know it's a problem but with a little organization you can sort out what ok & whats not.0

My mum stopped me having dairy when I was younger - she reckoned it made me wheeze. Probably was just a fad to be honest but she might have been right.
Anyway I didn't like soya milk, but loved all other soya type products. My Mum also used to make rice pudding with soya milk and didn't mind it that way.
I did like goats milk, not sure why. Things like that were harder to get when I was a kid so soya wasn't available everywhere like it is now. A friend who used to look after me and my sister after school had a goat and we milked the goat and drank the milk fresh (probably wasn't that safe in terms of infection but didn't do me any harm!). I think that is why I liked goat's milk.
Chocolate soya milk is lovely, but sugary.
I wish there had been this choice when I was younger! I still eat some soya stuff just cos I was used to it from being a kid.0 -
Talking about soya milk etc, can anyone suggest a powdered soya milk that doesn't have a sweetener in it (maltodextrin), I hate tea or coffee with sweetener in - ugh!! I need some for when I go on holiday as travelling with cartons is a bit of a bind & I don't know if I can buy it where I'm going. Failing that does anyone know what powdered goat/sheep/rice milk is like as I've seen them in health shops. Wouldn't want to get some & then find it tastes vile. I've tried looking on the net but haven't found anything as yet. Hope someone can help. Cheers.0
