thanks happyMJ this is what I was going at - I understand that I should not wash them in the washing machine but the retailers should defi have it in clear what makes the warranty void or what ground they can refuse a exchange (specially something bought a week ago) recommendations are merely a tool but if it a hinders my rights as a customer then it should be more clear in the clause.

Traders cannot make every single warranty voiding position clear far to many .But i expect they think common sense is alive and well .

Exactly, brand new trainers for a half marathon.

With the prevalent "it's always someone else's fault and I'm never to blame" culture in the UK, I'm very much afraid that it is serious.

When Apple sell an iPad, they do not specifically state that they do not recommend putting it in a washing machine to clean it.

I suppose you have another thread going somewhere else where you washed your phone / tablet / tv or something and how Sony / Samsung / Apple / Microsoft are refusing to honour their warranty ?
  • seriously i am so for taking personal responsibility and not fall for the blame culture but hands up for how many people before have washed their trainers in the washing machine!! i have been doing so for ages and nothing happened to my trainers before until this one - i am not a fool and i know the difference in washing an ipad and washing trainers in washing machine

True, I've been known to chuck my 4 year old's sneakers in the washing machine - some have had instructions saying they are machine washable, some haven't put I took a punt anyway. The difference is that hers only cost about £12 at the most and have a life of only a few months maximum due to wear and foot growth. I wouldn't though put a pair of £100 trainers in the machine as I wouldn't assume they were machine washable unless there was a label making it explicitly clear that this was a recommended method of cleaning them.
  • Unless you can prove that you put them in the machine on a washing cycle which stated that it was okay for trainers, I honestly don't think you will have any chance of winning legal action.

Even though the warranty or website might not have stated that putting the trainers in a washing machine voids the warranty, you still did something that the manufacturer clearly said was "not recommended".

Even then the claim would be against the washing machine company rather than Nike!

No chance on this one OP, sorry.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • I have washed trainers many times in a washing machine, and they have not been damaged.

    As have I.
However, the trainers that I normally wear are not lightweight ones designed for running.
Being running shoes, they will probably have lots of ventilation holes or breathable fabrics which would probably make them more susceptible to physical damage from conditions that they were not designed to endure (such as in a washing machine).

I agree with the others. It must be treated as a lesson learnt. An expensive lesson, but one that is no fault of the manufacturer of either the shoes or the washing machine.
