washed my trainers in the washing machine and now Nike wont exchange them

Hi there,
I bought 'nike air zoom pegasus' last week and ran half a marathon with them. as it was really muddy, my trainers got very dirty and I put them in the washing machine on a small cycle and washed them and they came out damaged. I contacted Nike for a exchange and they told me that since I washed them in the washing machine, the warranty has voided and I wont get a refund or exchange. But no where on the website it says that my warranty would be voided if I washed them in the washing machine and they says that they dont 'recommend' me not washing my trainers this way but do not clearly states that DO NOT do so.
what are my rights here and would can I do more? I paid nearly £100 for my trainers a week ago and now they are unwearable
thanks guys

Your trainers will likely have come with some information about cleaning them,. Just because it doesn't say not to do something is no reason to believe they will be fine if you do that particular thing.
For example, they don't tell you not to try and burn off any dirt using napalm, so maybe that's a thing that you could have tried instead ?

You put trainers in a washing machine and are expecting a refund. Don't think so. Next time don't do that. Hand wash without fully immersing them in water is the best way. Lot's of air to get rid of any smells.

    and anyway... http://help-en-us.nike.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/43/~/how-to-clean-nike-shoes

    Quoted the important bit below

Nike does not recommend any alternative cleaning methods, placing your shoes in a washing machine or dryer, or using any other products on your shoes such as bleach or other chemicals.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • I understand what you saying -
all the cleaning instructions are online - they say how to clean them and they 'recommend' not washing them in the washing machine but doesnt say that by doing so the warranty would be voided. this is my issue. those trainers are breathable trainers with loads of hole likes covering for helping my feet to breath and mud goes inside and its difficult to clean with merely a cloth so I put them in the washing machine - wasnt aware that they had metal panelling around the sole with came off in the washing machine - there was no instructions with the shoes but it was online only
  • and I dont want a refund but an exchange so I have trainers which I can wear.
  • . this is my issue.

As you say, this is your issue.

    No one else's. Certainly not Nike's ....

Your method of washing them damaged them so you didn't wash them correctly. Nike are not to blame for your machine damaging them.

Don't forget the water in the machine heats up and melts the materials used in the manufacture of the trainers, and not just the glue.
  • thanks happyMJ this is what I was going at - I understand that I should not wash them in the washing machine but the retailers should defi have it in clear what makes the warranty void or what ground they can refuse a exchange (specially something bought a week ago) recommendations are merely a tool but if it a hinders my rights as a customer then it should be more clear in the clause.
  • Unless your trainers were faulty, you did not have right to exchange or return after you used them.

They were not faulty in manufacture.

But, do go on, sue them and give everyone there a really good laugh.

    This is not serious???
  • From the Nike UK website:
Shoes, clothing and gear: Nike will accept your return if the order was purchased on Nike.com less than two years ago and inspectors confirm the product contains a material or workmanship flaw. Please include a letter with your return explaining the issue.
There wasn't a manufacturing defect, hence no valid warranty claim.

The trainers might not have stated that they shouldn't be put in a washing machine, but should they really have to?
I've never seen a washing machine with a cycle for trainers and shoes which gives a reasonable indication that putting them in isn't a good idea.
