benefits and jobseekers allowance worries

hi, good day to everyone !
hope people can help me, my new girlfriend has recently been made redundant, first time she's been out of work and she is 39. she has 3 children (5,13 & 16 - all still in school)and has had to apply for jobseekers allowance. She is very distraught as they have said she will not get her first payment for a month. This has left her distraught with worry, how can she put food on the table, pay any bills etc
I cant explain to her why this is, she has very little family who she can turn to. Weve not been together that long really but ive never seen her like this before and I'm really worried about her, especially when I'm not there.
jobseekers have said she needs to do 30hrs p/w to get her entitlement also, is this correct?
they weren't very helpful at all to her, most questions they just kept saying 'ring the helpline'.
but her biggest concern is what she does for money for the first month, maybe some sort of crisis loan? but even this puts her in arrears before she starts. She averages £15 p/w from csa, her ex owes £2,500 but I doubt she will ever see it, csa are 'on the case' but have been for a number of months.
am sure there must be thousands of people in same position as her and just wondered if people could give us any ideas on how she is to cope.
We are both new to all this, feel let down by the government tbh, but am sure there are millions of families in the uk like us....
many thanks if anyone can help it would be really appreciated x

she has had her interview but they weren't helpful at all, she counted 5 times they said 'you'll have to ring the helpline' to her queries, even when she pointed out to them that seeing as she is in their office surely they should be able to answer her.
she has applied for jobseekers but wont get any payments off them for a month. thanks0 -
Ive never known it take a month, its normally 2 weeks after you sign on.0
