Couriers demanding cash on delivery - is it legal?

Hi all and thank you so much for taking an interest and offering your thoughts and advice.
I have a receipt for the "Purchase" of the item ($99.00) and postage and packaging ($11.99):
"From amount £74.45 GBP
To amount $110.99 USD
Exchange rate: 1 British Pound = 1.49079 US Dollars"
I then have a separate receipt for "International Delivery and Import Charge" at $40.70:
"This charge will appear on your credit card statement as "PAYPAL *PITNEYBOWES"
Payment sent to
From amount £27.30 GBP
To amount $40.70 USD
Exchange rate: 1 British Pound = 1.49084 US Dollars"
From what you're saying, I would take this to be taken care of and will perhaps print this receipt from Paypal in case the courier does make a request for cash at the door.0 -
As you've bought under the GSP programme there should be nothing else to pay at all. As you say though it never hurts to have all the necessary receipts about your person.Bitrocking wrote: »Hi all and thank you so much for taking an interest and offering your thoughts and advice.

As you are not familiar with the GSP, the following bit is the bit that confirms that is what the buyer used. if you have a bit of a trawl through the community boards it crops up a bit and that's how some of us are familiar with it.

Apologies, this is a bit long winded but here is the official explanation to why the GSP shows a separate charge to Pitney Bowes
Pitney Bowes' Role as Your Forwarding Agent. By purchasing the GSP Item and consenting to these Terms, you authorize Pitney Bowes to act as your agent for the shipment and delivery of the GSP Item. As your appointed forwarding agent, Pitney Bowes will: (A) make export classifications and complete export filings, including but not limited to, preparing and transmitting any Electronic Export Information or other documents or records required to be filed by the US Census Bureau, US Customs and Border Protection, Bureau of Industry and Security, and/or any other US government agency, (B) arrange for the importation of the GSP Item, including, but not limited to, assigning Harmonized System classification codes to each GSP Item and filing a completed customs entry and related documents with the customs authorities of the country into which the GSP Item is being imported, (C) account for and pay the assessed import duties and other taxes due upon importation of the GSP Item, each on your behalf, (D) manage any dispute with such authorities regarding customs classifications, applicable duties and/or taxes, and (E) perform any other act that may be required by law or regulation in connection with the exportation, importation and/or transportation of any GSP Item purchased by you for shipment out of the United States and into any other country. The making of export classifications and assigning Harmonized System classification codes requires expertise. You will defer to the expertise of Pitney Bowes in performing this task and will not question the export classifications made by Pitney Bowes on your behalf or the Harmonized System classification codes so assigned by Pitney Bowes.
Here is the actual terms you agreed to.... http://pages.ebay.ca/shipping/globalshipping/buyer-tnc.htmlI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. but this was NEVER stated in the opening post.Bitrocking wrote: »I recently purchased an item of sports equipment on ebay, from Ohio, USA. I was quite pleased to get it for a good price even after adding on postage, packaging and the import and customs charges. it is due to be delivered in about 3-4weeks. However, when telling a friend, she said that she made a similar purchase, but when UPS arrived to deliver, they demanded £50 cash delivery charge before they would part with the item. She signed a delivery notice, but had not been expecting the charge, did not get a receipt in hand and she thought it was lucky she'd had the cash in the house.
Is this legal? I have paid via Paypal, the original item costing just under £75 and the import and customs charges at £27.30. As i work full time, I have sent it to my paents house so someone would be in for the delivery, but don't want them to get a pushy courier saying they must pay cash at the door or they will not deliver. Any advice, please?
in fact then OP was assuming things due to what a friend stated
the OP listed the pitney bowes listing AFTER i stated how import duty is worked out regarding couriers0 -
Maybe because the OP didnt think they were dealing with idiots and that everyone would understand they were using the GSP[got it right this time lol] when they stated this I have paid via Paypal, the original item costing just under £75 and the import and customs charges at £27.30but this was NEVER stated in the opening post.

The reason the OP listed the Pitney Bowes bit later was clarify the issue because some apparently were unable to understand the intial post.
