Email notification of posts - Help!

Originally, I opted for weekly notification of new posts on threads I was subscribed to. These used to all come through in a block on a Monday morning.
Fine.
Then about three or four weeks ago or so, the emails, which contained the new posts, suddenly switched to being only notifications of a new post on a subscribed thread, rather than the new posts themselves, but worse still, these started coming through immediately!
As I post a lot, this constant deluge of emails became annoying.
I checked my preferences, and they were still set to weekly notifications., yet I was getting the emails daily, sometimes several times a day!
Puzzled, I decided to opt for for no emails at all, but the notifications are still coming through immediately, loads of them, and it's driving me mad!
What's going on? I was careful to 'save changes' when I amended my options!
Why did it suddenly change style, why did it suddenly change frequency, and why can't I turn them off?

I managed to stop the notification by turning them off at the User CP, (even though this was only set for weekly!) as well as at the mail options on the preferences column.
But I still don't know why they only came to me as a notification of a post, rather than the posts themselves, like before.
