I had a Barclaycard several years ago which due to financial issues I ended up with late payments on. I used it wrongly and hence got into the trap of minimum payments and late payment markers. I did get it paid off.

A couple of years back, I applied for a new Barclaycard Reward card. I had no problems getting the card. I met the requirements (income etc) and passed the credit check. I now make sure I pay off the bill every month so that I take advantage of the benefits at no cost to myself

Companies realise that our circumstances change.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

I had the same situation as yourself have had a Barclaycard twice since then and was never asked about old debt.

Me too. I had a Barclaycard many years ago that defaulted due to leaving an abusive relationship and having no money to pay my debts. I now have a Barclaycard again and am on the straight and narrow with them.

If they don't want you as a customer they will tell you so. Just make sure you have learned from the past.

    Good luck. :)
  • OP why not over pay on your current debts?
  • OP why not over pay on your current debts?

Yes that is an option for me. Its not a must that I get this card. I was just hoping to use it in reducing my current interest rates and pay off the debts quicker

Doesn't appear so. If you learned your lesson you would have paid the debt.

Waiting for it to drop off your credit report isn't really 'learning a lesson'.

Did I rub you the wrong way or something Voltaire7?
Everytime you've posted, It has had a negative tone to it.

Just to be clear, Yes I do have existing debt.
The aim of acquiring this card would be to move the debt over, NOT create more debt.
The debt I currently have outstanding is being paid on time, so no issues at all with them other than wanting to clear them earlier, which I have already explained.
And Yes I have learned my lesson, If you don't think so, THAT is your opinion. I merely came on here to ask a question and get some feedback and I thank the people who have posted on here and shared their personal points of view.

A balance transfer will increase your debt in the short term due to the balance transfer fee.

I was just clarifying the facts. Guess you're not too keen on the facts.

The old Barclaycard debt is still outstanding. It might fall off your credit reports, but it's still outstanding. Another fact you may not like.

Thanks DAD.. Yes I am well aware of that FACT and I don't need anything clarifying
  • The old debt will NOT come back to bite you.

The new one might though :D

Oh god it is. It is!
    Its six years of hell.
I got into trouble stupidly about 10 years ago now. Never own horses if your skint folks :( and leaving my ex who was the main earner didn't help.
    I was in a hell of a mess :o
Never again! Took me years and years to sort it.
I've well and truly learned a lesson.
I have a lot of respect for my credit now.
I'm so careful now. Paranoid in fact. I do have a Barclaycard but I pay religiously as soon as the statement is through.
I'm so grateful to be back on track.
    :T
