Applying for a Credit card with previous debtor

Hi

I'm not sure if anyone can answer this but I thought I would ask anyway and see how far I get with it
I would like to apply for the Barclaycard with 35month 0% but I am a bit worried because I got into some bad debt with them in the past which since been removed off my credit file because its probably close to 9 years.. or possibly even longer since it happened.
I'm not so worried about being declined, (although I have done a soft search using Martin's link and Barclaycard is one of the cards recommended)
What I am worried about is reopening old debt and being asked to pay it now after so long or being approved for it and they give me a credit limit equal to the debt amount and add the debt to the new account, where I would have to pay it.
My credit is improving and should be back on par very soon so don't want anything that may derail it.
Does anyone know if there is some type of statute that prevents things like this being done or is it just better to steer clear of them?

Thanks In advance

AFAIK, it prevents only legal actions against you and, possibly (?), reporting the old debt to CRAs.

As grumbler so kindly mentioned, I have an existing car loan and another credit card which I would like to roll into 1 loan if possible.
This will allow me to pay them off quicker,
I Learned my lesson years ago and I don't apply for something I can not afford to pay back. I'm just looking for a cheaper lender that will allow me to pay the debt off quicker and save me a bit of money in the process.

Although the evidence may have dropped off your credit reports, Barclaycard may still have the details recorded internally.

Yes I understand that they may still have the report and I may possibly get declined because of it, which is fine.
What I am asking is that will they be able to come after me for that debt from many years ago or will it just be a simple decline for "whatever reason".
I'm not bothered about a decline as I'm not touting for credit and have no plans to apply elsewhere for credit at the present moment.

I had the same situation as yourself have had a Barclaycard twice since then and was never asked about old debt.

Once the debt is statute barred, that is it - doesn't mean you don't owe it but cannot be chased any more.

Chances are if you previously defaulted on a debt they will have a flag that automatically declines you - you can try but you might as well go for one of the other banks with similar offers to reduce credit searches

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • I only became interested in Barclaycard when Martin's soft search on my credit highlighted them as the most likely to give me a new card otherwise I would have left them alone.
    Thanks Nasqueron and Lynz68.
I guess its just a case of deciding whether to submit an application or not.

    Cheers

Doesn't appear so. If you learned your lesson you would have paid the debt.

Waiting for it to drop off your credit report isn't really 'learning a lesson'.

The eligibility checker is indicative at best, plus it cannot take into account any information kept internally at banks, if Barclaycard still remembers the default.
