  • Yep...becoming clearer that this does seem to be what the problem is - ie nothing to do with me or my computer.

Thanks for advice Cyberman. I'm not very technically minded at all.

I assume that moneypooh and myself can just "wait it out" for their techie to sort us all out from afar and, give it a day or two, then that problem update will be sorted out and we can just go back to our normal IE use. That is presumably the easiest option for us - ie to just use another browser for the time being and wait....

EDIT; just seen Oblivions post and...yep....I'll just wait it out then.

It sounds that if you already have Firefox or Chrome installed then you can continue to use those browsers temporarily instead of IE until Norton sort out their bug.

Incidentally, restoring will also backdate Norton to a previous version which should allow your system to work on IE. Just switch off all automatic update options until Norton notify that their rectified version is available. ;)
  • Yep...its Firefox I'm using at present. Thank goodness I put another browser up on my screen just in case....

    Yep definitely a Norton update.
I've just restored to a few days ago and turned off Norton's live updates. Back up and running in minutes :):)

I don't want to tempt fate but I've just exited Safe mode, rebooted into normal Windows and run Norton's Live Update and 3 updates were installed and tada........ so far IE11 is working normally again, so hopefully one of those updates was the fix ..... don't anybody sneeze! :D

Your brave oblivion, I'm going to keep checking the techie pages until they say Norton have released a fix.

Just run it on my Windows 8.1 ultrabook and that's fixed and IE11 working fine again too. Looking good.

Update: All five of our computers now updated by Norton and all working fine.

Good news :) I'll be brave later .....
  • Just shows how much I've (not!) been studying whats what re my updates...ahem...

Does Norton do automatic updates then, say, every 24 hours (ie in the morning by the look of it)? So mine will be sorted by this point tomorrow without me risking doing anything?

If you click on the Norton icon in the system tray at the bottom of your screen it should bring up the Norton Console. Look at Settings and ensure that Automatic Updates and Pulse Updates are set to On and it will then continue to update in real time ... that way you get the latest anti-virus definition files as soon as they are created by Norton.

It's just a shame they got this one update so seriously wrong but hopefully it's a one-off.
