Sounds like he wants the money, but is not at all bothered about his duties and responsibilities as a landlord. People like this give good landlords a bad name.

I would report him to the council and the HMRC.

BTW; if he has not put your deposit into the DPS he doesn't have a legal leg to stand on.

OP is a lodger. The deposit rules don't apply.

And even if he was a tenant, there are 3 or 4 other schemes that are equally approved.

On the reporting side, is there any gas heating / boiler / cooker at the premises? Bet he hasn't got a LL's gas safety certificate either ...

Hi All, New to the site - unsure of how to log a new thread sorry for jumping on the band wagon RE: Electoral Roll. Does anyone know how homeless people register? if they have a correspondence address are they able to make this clear - or will they still be subject to the council tax increase for 2 people, even though they do not live or reside at the address? If able to add this detail onto electoral register would this have a negative effect on credit file? Thank you in advance! :)

The electoral role and amount of council tax due are two entirely separate issues.
If you are homeless you will not pay council tax.
Surely you would have to reside here to vote here.
  • :D I'm only guessing though.

Why are you homeless? What's the story? Maybe mse can help :)
  • What are you really asking drew? What's your motive?

Hi All, thanks for being so prompt. Long and short of it is I've got myself into a bit of a sticky situation - had my own place rented privately & lost it due to relationship ending and I could not afford it by myself with this I ran up some debt trying to keep the place on myself (credit cards mainly!) and my credit score is super low with electoral roll being highlighted as a cause. Out of necessity I now stay between 3 of my relatives homes as I could not afford my own place - this is them being super generous and supportive enabling me to save some money to get back on my feet slowly - I thought I could try and re-build my credit rating by paying some extra money off cards each month and put a little away for my own place. I wondered if I could do this by adding my name to the electoral roll with my 'correspondence' address I could maybe kill 2 birds and get my ability to vote this year while helping my credit file.......but obviously not at the cost of my uncle who pays discounted C/Tax as he is helping as it is.....I hope this clarifies :)

Marleyboy - thank you so much...that is really helpful stuff :)

To keep the thread updated it states quite clearly:

People with no fixed address should complete a Declaration of local connection available from the local electoral registration office. On the form you need to give an address where you would be living if it were not for your current situation, or an address where you have lived in the past. If you are homeless, you can give details of where you spend a substantial part of your time.

Now the final bit - does anyone know if this could be marked as anything other than 'address' on my credit file as I fear if it says the address i provide is 'temporary accommodation' or 'no fixed abode' I will be viewed as high risk?

Thank you all for your help and patience! :)

MissPickle - thanks, as do you all ;) I could if perhaps more entertaining or for a better read divulge juicy details on my relationship ending or digress to doom on how it feels after feeling secure in a home I had built with someone, to now have to resort to what I can at-best describe as sofa surfing at relatives houses while trying to un-do this mess I've gotten myself into. Picking up silly hours at work to try and get my stuff together, but in all honesty (believe it or not) I just want to move onwards both personally and financially towards getting my independence back. I know I am not the first and doubt I will be the last in this situation and the show must go on I suppose.
I am a self confessed sceptic of most things so understand your curiosity though but sometimes things are no more or no less than they seem I'm afraid :)
