It isn't worth hundreds to me so I suppose I could just chance it let it drop back into the public domain.
It depends how much traffic it gets and the quality of the domain name but some domains don't go back into the pool but end up being click farms driving traffic to other sites.0 -

forgot about these sites. they even do this with low traffic domains and then will bombard you with offers to sell it to you as a previous registrant for hundreds.
I had 1 domain i registered but never got the project off the ground, so let the domain expire ( never even set it up on a server) this was picked up by one of these companies and they tried to sell it to me for $1000 at first and within 4 months they tried again for $1000 -
An update.
Website up and running hosted by Falcoda.
Getting my domain back and switching the tag wasn't exactly straightforward with both 123-reg and Webfusion, although polite, denying responsibility and sending me round and round in circles of futility. In the end I got Nominet to sort it, but it did cost me £24.
In contrast, transfer to Falcoda was very smooth, pain free and fast.0 -
I had free hosting for years via http://www.000webhost.com/
Caveat: You have to keep your site scrupulously free from spammer entry points, if any hacker/spammer finds a way to spam via your site, e.g by bouncing autoresponder replies off a 'contact us' form, they suspend you.
They will also migrate you to Hosting24 that's affiliated and I had a commercial site on Hosting24 for some years too as it was highly competitive.
Tech support by email was quite acceptable on both services.
The domain email works by linking into the Google mail application, a bit fiddly to set up but once working is fine.0 -

What's your definition of cheap in this context, what sort of application do you need hosting for and how technical are you?
Have you looked at OpenShift, Linode or AWS Free Tier?0 -
You're a little bit late to the party, given the OP advised in post #34 that he's all set up.0

I am.
Thanks anyway.0 -
A really helpful and useful thread.
I've just checked out the Falcoda website - their prices for hosting are really competitive. Also seem to have 24 hour support via web chat as I asked a couple of questions and they were really helpful.
I'll certainly consider moving our Club website over to them when our current contract expires in the autumn.
Please post how you get on with them.0 -
I've never heard of Falcoda but they look good. I'll remember that.
Thanks for sharing0 -
I know that the OP found a solution (and it is a good one) but I just found this and I thought I'd share it.
£2/month for hosting of up to 5 websites sound great. I appreciate that all the 5 sites will have to be small and I don't know how technical one needs to be to use it(whether they have 1 click installs or you need to install your OS) but either way, I hope it will help someone.0
