Hello
Is there any additional step to take to be protected on a public wifi i.e. coffee shop? Are Avast and Malwarebytes enough?
Thanks

Protect what ???
Enough depends upon what you do with public WiFi .
Banking or downloading is not worth the risk over public WiFi .0 -

Protection from when I log into my email and other log in / password sites and I download stuff from trusted sources. I never use Wifi for banking
why is downloading on Wifi dangerous? I only download free / legally free stuff anyway from sites like download.cnet.com etc. not Piratebay or similar. is that still risky ?

It is exactly what it says on the tin. Public WiFi. So its public, not private. And anyone with half a tech savvy about them can view it. So the answers no unfortunately.0 -
Surely if you browse a secure site then it's encrypted - obviously if you browse via plain text then not so there is a possibility of interception.0

I agree but can anyone see even the passwords you enter when you log into your email (even though when you type passwords you only see asterisks yourself, not the actual password) ?
because if that was the case then coffee shops would be empty surely? No one would use free wifi ever
I'm just trying to suss out the degree of non-security, that's all
