Protection on public wifi ?

That is not correct for HTTPS as a simple google query will reveal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTPSThe issue is, that with the un-secured WiFi networks, the data between your device and the hot-spot is not encrypted between the devices (not even for HTTPS sites). Any encryption only happens betwen the router running the hot-spot and the website you are connecting to.
The way to keep plain http and other trafic secure from eavesdropping is by the use of a VPN and there are free offerings but then you need to trust the VPN provider and test that the traffic really is encrypted (easy enough to do if you can follow instructions found via google).
Best option is to avoid free WiFi for anything but trivial use.0 -
You could use TOR. TOR traffic is encrypted from your client to the exit node so should be safe.
Although TOR in itself is not a true end-to-end encrypted service you are only really concerned with protecting your connection from client to router so you should be fine.0
