Till recently I too would never touch an AMD with a bargepole, purely down to them traditionally running hot. This is not the case anymore.

The fan on the AMD Vostro is barely on compared to my HP Pentium M

Yes.. and the new Turion 64 X2 processors (TL series ie. TL60) run very cool and are very efficient on power consumption... :T

This is the Vostro™ 1000 NB(N0910003) with 1 year, big battery and shiny screen. Or is it my bad maths? £505.32
    Seth.
  • No prices seems to have gone up quite substantially just in the past week which is a shame as I was ready to buy :(

The deals are supposedly refreshed on a Thursday but they weren't :s

  • I am glad those of you who bought this Vostro are pleased with your laptops as much as I am.
I recently had one Vostro fail on me last week and Dell customer services organised a repair at my home address within 48 Hours. The motherboard was replaced and the computer is working fine. All electronic equipment can/could breakdown at anytime and I am not at all upset that the Vostro I have failed on me. The service from Dell was outstanding, the laptop runs cool and very fast. I purchased 5 for various members of my family and everybody is very pleased with their laptops.

Total paid for each laptop (including quidco discount) = £336.11

    V1000 Athlon TK53 1700Mhz
    WXGA 15.4"
    2 x 1024MB
    8 x DVD/RW
    120GB Serial ATA
    802.11b/g
    ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 Hypermemory
    Windows XP SP2 Pro

  • Is the ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 Hypermemory onboard graphics any good for games like hl2 , doom and all that sort? Bearing in mind the spec I am looking for includes 2gig of ram.

I am also so stuck on choosing XP or Vista - can not decide at all :(
  • I currently have this desktop rig:

    Windows XP Pro
    1 Gig ram
ati radeon 9700 pro 128mb card
    160 gig IDE hdd
    19inch crt screen
    amd xp barton 2500 cpu

Its about 7 years old so any current notebook I buy will be a shocking improvement :)

The Vostro is aimed more for the business user. You won't find it in the home section as Dell recommend the Inspiron range for the home user.

Even though it's in the business section you can still buy it for home use.

What to write at the checkout? It is asking me for Company Name and so on?

    Just use your own name

    It'll be addressed to:
    Joe Bloggs
    Joe Bloggs
    1 High st
    etc

but it works OK - you may get a phone call to ask if you are a company - but don't worry - they don't mind.
