YES - the Core2Duo is far, far more power efficient; batteries last longer and it doesn't get anywhere near as warm.
Bit more expensive, though.
If you're looking to spend £350 to £400 I'm sure you can find a Core Duo (bit older). Still better for a laptop than the Athlon.
Don't confuse the Athlon 64 (in this Vostro) to the Turion 64 - the Turion is a mobile chip that's more power efficient (but still not as good as the Intel chips)0 -
AGGGGHHHH Why are people so biased towards intel !!!!!!!
This laptop is fantastic spec for the price !!! And even without the price its still a very decent spec for a laptop !!!!!!
The amd chips are good personally i prefer amd to intel !!
I have baught two of these laptops and know i will be very happy with them.
Some useful points for anyone considering the laptop -
- If you order over the phone dell will give you home premium instead of vista without any fuss.
-You have baraining power with dell. Try to get them to throw in a free upgrade I got them to throw me in a truelife screen an a 6 cell upgrade.
- If your buying online go via quidco to get a few quid backMerry Christmas MSE!0 -
If I already have a copy of XP, am I best getting this laptop with Vista and then rolling back to XP or even a Linux distribution if I don't like it? Is that possible or isn't it that simple? I've never used Vista but considering Microsoft's penchant for upping the demands on the system with each release I'm not sure I'll like it. Seems a shame to change it to XP and miss a free copy of vista.
I bought a Vostro with Vispa for a friend. But I think Vispa is very pretty but a complete waste of space.
So I've made the machine dual boot to Vispa and XP. You can find some details at http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp0 -

Because it's been proven time and time again that the Intel CPUs are far more power efficient than AMD's mobile offerings?
I'd have thought power consumption was a major consideration in a laptop.

I have been told never to buy a dell laptop as the customer services is very poor when things go wrong.0

IF things go wrong
I bought a Dell laptop a year ago knowing it had a 90 day warranty (don't think they do that any more) so if it broke down after that I'd be pretty stuffed.
Never had any trouble with it and would definately buy Dell again.0 -
You have 12 months warranty anyway.0

We have got three Dell laptops in our household. Two have never gone wrong. The oldest is about 8 years old.
The third Dell, the one I'm using right now, had a motherboard failure outside the 12 month warranty period. I discovered that the problem was a design fault and that Dell had known about it. They had corrected the problem in later models. The sale of goods act states that "inherent" problems such as mine i.e. problems that were there from new but which take time to show themselves, are not subject to the standard 12 month warrany period and you may claim several years later.
After a few letters to Dell, quoting the relative part of the sale of goods act, they collected the laptop from my house, replaced the motherboard, repaired another unrelated defect and returned it to my house within the week, all free of charge. I had to be quite firm but in the end, Dell were very good.0 -
The Vostro is aimed more for the business user. You won't find it in the home section as Dell recommend the Inspiron range for the home user.
Even though it's in the business section you can still buy it for home use.
I've just gone online to buy a Vostro laptop in the small business section. How exactly do you go about buying it for home use? I left the company name section blank and selected the home use option from the drop-down box at the bottom but it won't let me progress without entering anything for the company name. How do people usually get round this?
Thanks in advance0
