Is there a dash cam that can be used continuously via battery (or via a USB external battery/charger)?

You need to look for one with a parking mode. I've just bought the Blacksys CF-100 - bought directly from Korea on ebay much cheaper than a UK seller (although there is a chance it will get caught in customs and you'll have to pay VAT + admin fee). The rear camera version isn't much more expensive and is essential to catch rear-end impacts.

Any one with parking mode can run continuously, as long as your car's power socket is powered continuously. The best ones will switch from continual recording to motion detection after a certain time to save energy, but if it's left on over a weekend it could still flatten the battery (as I found out:o)

Ive been looking into these since watching that program on TV and I've borrowed it down to either the Mini 0806 or the Mobius

    http://www.carcamerashop.co.uk/car-cameras.html

I think the Mini 0806 will match my needs better and will be easier to attach / setup, but the Mobius maybe a little smaller....any thoughts on either?

I wanted something small which I could kind of hide up close under my mirror, place the power lead around the edge of the screen, around the dash to the cigarette socket and just leave it plugged in, overwriting itself, just check its all ok weeky and leave it to do its job.....but I have all sensors on my car so there is a plastic shield around my mirror so it would be more on view that I was wanting.....therefore I'm still considering the options.

How much power does it draw when the car engine is off, could you use something like one of these?

Plug it into it when to turn the engine off and save your car battery, or if there is a way to connect in between so the car battery charges that and the camera is pugged into it so you don't have to swop it over each time. But if it only lasts a few hours that won't be any use.

I have the Mobius. It's very small and sits between the rear view mirror and the windscreen. Because it's black and against the black background of the mirror it's not really noticeable from the outside.
Had it for nearly 2 years now and very happy with it.

That's how I wanted to fit one, but with this plastic cover it will either be below the mirror or to one side; both of which would be more noticeable than I wanted...So I need very small for what I'm wanting.

I pondered this for a long time but decided although ones with a screen are functionally better, I really didn't intend messing about with it unless an event actually happened.
The largers cams with screens are pretty much treated like a SatNav so I would be removing it every time I stopped and reattaching it every time I got in the car.

I opted for the "fit and forget" Mobius.

I was going to shorten the screw to get it higher but it is just right to pop out the memory card (I have a second card in the glovebox) and take indoors to the PC.
I fitted it to the plastic rear view mirror surround and so far, not one person (to my knowledge) has noticed it fitted from the outside.

The USB cable runs into my glovebox so I can pop it out and connect my HTC One phone to it to change settings and such without removing/disturbing the camera using an App.
