PayPal helping themselves to my Current account!
wildcardsa
Just checking my online banking with Barclays this Arvo, when I noticed a DD paid to PayPal for £40 and then another 5 days earlier for £54! This concerned me as my PAYPAL account is not linked to my Barclays current account, at all, nor shows activity of such on PayPal.
I immediately called Barclays and they confirmed that a DD was setup in the name PayPal And that 13 payments have been made. The operator also mentioned that she was unable to access the details regarding this, nor a setup date etc.
she told me I had to notify PayPal first and only then would they investigate if PayPal didn't do anything! That's great, so in the interim, more payments can go out from my compromised account!!
Anyone else have issues like this?

Just cancel the direct debit, that'll prevent anymore money being taken from your account, the advisor should have done this for you.
Get in touch with PayPal and their fraud team will look into it, they're usually pretty good with stuff like this.Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.
ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.0 -
Under the Direct Debit guarantee, Barclays have to credit all unauthorised DD amounts back to your accounts immediately.

They can subsequently demand it back from you if Paypal can prove that you owed the money.0 -
When you call the bank to inform them someone is stealing your money I am sure they put the call through to the Nut House.I do Contracts, all day every day.0

wrong advice im afraid.
no indemnity claim is competent - you/someone paid PayPal (an intermediary).
If the bank try to do an indemnity it will fail.
the bank should have cancelled the direct debit and referred you to paypal.0 -
The DD Guarantee applies to all DDs. End of.101problems wrote: »wrong advice im afraid.
can you try again, this time in English perhaps?101problems wrote: »no indemnity claim is competent - you/someone paid PayPal (an intermediary).
The bank's claim on Paypal will only fail if Paypal can prove they are owed the money (which may well be so. that's what I said what I said).101problems wrote: »If the bank try to do an indemnity it will fail.
true, they could have offered to cancel the DD. Equally, the OP can cancel the DD themselves, as they have online access to their account.101problems wrote: »the bank should have cancelled the direct debit
That's what they allegedly did, which is not in line with the DD Guarantee.101problems wrote: »and referred you to paypal.
OP, whilst you may not win this one in the end, please ignore anyone, including from Barclays, who says the DD Guarantee will not apply. It does.0 -
give them a phone ask them to do an indemnity?
Paypal is an intermediary payment provider and is exempt from the direct debit gaurantee scheme.
they have there own disputes process specifically for this purpose.0 -
Really? I had money taken from my account when I hadnt logged into it for months. The IP was even from a different country (co nfirmed by customer service rep I spoke to) as was the delivery address.thebritishbloke wrote: »Just cancel the direct debit, that'll prevent anymore money being taken from your account, the advisor should have done this for you.

Their disputes process involved loads of automated emails... and one email from an actual person where it was clear the rep knew nothing about the problem as they were looking into it as goods not recieved, rather than a fraudulent purchase, which I attempted to set right via a series of emails and calls. Eventually the process ended with paypal fraud team deciding that as the seller had proof that the goods were shipped (to amsterdam...not to my home address) they could not recover my money. I again attempted to explain that I was not disputing that the seller was genuine, just that I didn't make the purchase.
I ended up doing a debit card chargeback which I assume was sucessful as I have heard nothing else about it nor had any money redebited from my account and it was 8 months ago now.0 -
So you noticed 2 out of 13 payments made without your knowledge? And you don't know that you can cancel a DD in your Barclays online? Are you sure you have all your facts together?
It doesn't sound credible that your Barclays account isn't linked to your Paypal account, as it obviously is. The DD mandate was set up by yourself, or a person who knows your bank account number and who has access to your Barclays account. Read up on how a DD mandate gets set up for Paypal.
You should still ask Barclays for an immediate refund but don't be surprised if the solution to the puzzle lies very close to home, and you may well have to pay the 13 bills.0 -
well for me. I would be logging into your paypal account.
If you have purchased via paypal and these payments show in your PP account, then you have linked the bank account.0 -

It could have been a fraudster who linked their own Paypal account to the OP's Barclays account. They would still have to had access to the OP's Barclays account though as the DD cannot be set up without knowing the amounts that Paypal pay into the current account as part of the DD setup.0
