PayPal helping themselves to my Current account!

It could have been a fraudster who linked their own Paypal account to the OP's Barclays account. They would still have to had access to the OP's Barclays account though as the DD cannot be set up without knowing the amounts that Paypal pay into the current account as part of the DD setup.

They used to pay two random amounts, so the above is correct. However they just send a single 1p credit now. So anyone can set up a direct debit knowing that they only credit 1p. It may have a unique reference though, can't remember exactly.

Paypal is an intermediary payment provider and is exempt from the direct debit gaurantee scheme.
    Any proofs?
    IMO it depends.
If the DD was legitimately set by the victim, then their PP account was hacked, then, possibly, it is exempt.
If the DD was set up fraudulently, then it isn't.

The OP says that "PAYPAL account is not linked to ... Barclays current account ... nor shows activity of such on PayPal". I think this means that it was a fraudulent DD set up from some other PP account, and their is no reason for it to be exempt from the DD guarantee.

I have just added a bank account to my Paypal account. The DD Guarantee applies to the DD that gets set up as a result of me adding the account (once I have confirmed the code Paypal has sent to my bank account)

You are correct - in the process I just went through, they said they'd send me a 4 digit code to my bank account. Until I have confirmed that code back to Paypal, Paypal cannot collect money from this account by DD.

OP: do you get paper bank statements? Has any of your post recently been missing?

A hacked online account can be another possibility. Setting a new payee can be more difficult (if not impossible) than a DD to some PP account, possibly hacked too.
  • Paypal have to be awarded the most unhelpful business. I noticed over 100 small transactions coming out of my current account labelled as a direct debit from Paypal. Apparently because its a DD the bank don't question payments!!!
I immediately contacted Paypal who were rude and obnoxious and told me they were under no circumstances fraudulent. bearing in mind I had not used my Paypal account for 6 months they didn't think this was strange. When asked if I had authorised a link on an email, I wasn't sure but I could have done. This was the answer they wanted and said that I had authorised all these transactions that amounted to over £2,000.00 and it was my own fault, and I had no chance of being able to reclaim the money. I have no money left, this is all my wages which I work hard to spend myself!!
It gets worse. I immediately closed the account and stopped anymore direct debits through my bank. I then had an email from Paypal to say that they had authorised an transaction for £38 and that they were collecting the debt which would escalate unless I paid this immediately and until this was paid could not close the account. This is a joke!! what choice did I have but to pay or else I would have CCJ's against me. It transpires that I have bought a Ukraine wife with the transactions coming from New Zealand. How the hell can this not be fraud. I have made a complaint to Paypal who still insist that this is my own fault. Can anyone offer help or advice please? I am at the end of my tether with this shameful company. Please do not link your debit card to Paypal.... better still do not use Paypal.

I left Paypal long ago over things like this, and Ebay snatching their selling fees, I left them as well.

Are you saying Paypal support international trade in human beings? That would be sensational and good enough reason for the company (ebay) to fold
