Hi, I'm due upgrade next week
Currently have iPhone 4s T-Mobile /orange contract £34 mth
Looking to reduce monthly outgoings but can't buy a phone upfront.
I can get s5 or new Nokia lumina for less a month
Any views on these please
Also, I'm going to go I to a shop on the upgrade day to look around,do I have to go I to T-Mobile or can I go carphone warehouse? I'm quite happy with T-Mobile but if I changed provider on that day is it quite straightforward? Will shop sort it out? Thanks for any help x

Worth holding off? The new S6 and HTC One are mooted to be launched March 1st.
Would see the S5 prices dropping

If you go to CPW they will sort out the swap between networks although it takes a while for numbers to port

Numbers to port? Lol so would I get a better / same deal in cpw than T-Mobile and haggling?
  • Firstly, do you need a new phone ?

If not, end the contract with T-Mobile (ask them to unlock the phone - do this anyway) and get a price for SIM only (which might be £10 - £15 a month.

If you are not a big user of apps and games, the Nokia Lumia Windows phones are good (but to get "nice" hardware you need to go to say a Lumia 830 which won't be that cheap).

Try a few options in Bill Monitor

I like CarPhone Warehouse as the phones come unlocked (except iPhones) and unbranded but it can be simpler to keep the relationship with the operator directly.

you could get a 5c from GIFFGAFF for £299 or £13.69 a month over 24 months ( less if you pay a bit upfront and then get a SIMO plan from any network (from £7.50 a month) as these are unlocked forever iphones

    iPhone 5s is £429 or £18.50 a month

what to do with Giffgaff, is create an account, order a FREE sim, then sign in and goto phones, and as you already have an account with sim, you wont need to chose one of their goodybags and can just order the phone.

I did this and ordered a 5c and paid £100 upfront, so just pay £9.11 for the phone and have a tescomobile £7.50 SIMO only

Early upgrade or is it the end of the minimum term?

If the latter you have to give a month's notice to be able to change the network without wasting money.

If the former, again, you have to pay the ETC if changing the network and you are likely to get a better deal if you wait until you are in the position to leave without paying fees.

As a side note, "iPods and iPads in the house", but can't buy a phone upfront? Living beyond means springs to mind.
