    Thanks - that's inferior to WPA2 though !!
But since the signal is (in theory) not escaping the house - then that will be fine.

    WPA2 uses AES

    WPA uses TKIP

But unlike wifi and WPA 2, you need to be on the same power line network, and know the key, whereas Wifi can be picked out by someone outside the house.

Remember the more complex the key the more the hardware has to do to decrypt it, and that can slow down the transfer.

You can encrypt data and then transmit it on Ethernet cables, but its not often done as like the power line you need to be on the network to pick it up , not sat outside a location with a big aerial.

HomePlug adapters use 56bit AES encryption technology and are 'paired'.
Most will do the Job you require....Personally I prefer Devolo products and have the Devolo 650 Triple now. So which you get, depends on your budget as much as anything else.

I'm a bit puzzled as to what you mean by a network extension lead? If you can run a cat5E cable upstairs it's a better solution than homeplugs as it's cheaper and faster.

My TP link ones (about 18 months old) use 128bit AES. I think this is the baseline now.

And before anyone suggests - a network extension lead, tried this - and got a slow speed downstairs !!

What exactly do you mean by this?

A run of CAT5e cable from your router to your PC upstairs would not slow down the network speed downstairs. If it did, you did it wrong.

...I assume that I just feed the output from the router to the input of one adapter - and take the output from another to the PC network port ?
Correct. Just to add that you can also get an adapter that extends wifi too (aswell as providing ethernet); most ethernet-only ones should have a power-saving mode so you can leave on 24/7 without using excessive power. (Not sure if the wifi ones hve a reduced power mode). Avoid Zyxel in my exprience.

Yeah -- cable is the way to go if you can.

Absolutely but a 5m cat 5 cable sitting up the stairs permanently may not go down well with a partner.

Depends on how it can be run. May even be an option to drop it through a wall cavity.
