thinkin of buying a chihuahua

but ive know idea how you toilet train one? sounds silly i know but do you paper floor or little tray? i thinking of a pocket one<chihuahua> so very tiny. roughly 3lb. any owners out there?
also what do you feed a dog that small? lol i feel silly to ask lol

You house train a Chi the same as any other dog - give them plenty of chances to 'go' where you want them to go, take them outside (on a lead if necessary) and let them sniff around, then give them a teeny food reward and gentle verbal praise when they go. If they have to be left for any time, a crate or a small room is the best place to leave them - with a bed at one end, and a shallow tray with a piece of the surface you want them to go on in it, at the other - this teaches the dog that even inside, you need to seek out this same surface. Then, when the dog is older you can remove the tray and it won't pee or poo indoors because it can't find the right surface.

Don't forget Chi's aren't supposed to be teeny tiny, and small ones haven't always been bred for good health and long lives, as these qualities are often sacrificed for tinyness.

I breed chihuahuas and currently have 6. Please be very careful about finding a good breeder. The very small chihuahuas are often runts of the litter and often suffer from health problems. As for litter training, my girls used to use a newspaper lined very large litter tray when we lived in a flat. I find piddle pads are expensive and are not much better than newspaper. My dogs also love to drag them round the floor and rip them up. They need just as much exercise as any other dog. Dont be fooled just because they are small!

sorry, forgot to say that as for feeding my girls eat fresh chicken twice a day thinly shredded. I mix in some small bite mixer to keep their teeth healthy and ensure they get all the nutrients they need. They are beautiful little dogs and deserve to eat the best.

oh i know they need a run as much as any dog. but after having a big old collie for 14 years im looking for a small lap dog that wont barge me out the way lol

I've had 2 dogs before and they both ripped up and ate their piddle pads!!! Also it's very expensive, newspaper works fine

I'm not a nutritionist, but I don't think just chicken and mixer is a balanced diet.

have you thought about a shih tzu?? ive got the prettiest one you have ever seen. very intelligent, she is 4 years now and never fails to be oohed and aahed in street!! she is very loyal and loving also, very quick to toilet train. about the chicken and mixer query, i was told to feed mitzi on chicken and white rice? but could not always afford it so we give her caesars and she is happy with that. also has some dried food on side dish but she isnt fussy and will eat ANYTHING we are having if she could.
