Travel to Florida via NT - two airlines two bookings - any issues?

  • That cover is very unusual: if you are sure that you are covered then I would be grateful if you could post details of the insurer. However, it is more probable that this situation is excluded. If in any doubt, see if you can get something in writing to confirm that you would in fact be covered.

Insurance as part of package with First Direct bank account.
  • Is it? i missed connection due to delay and insurance paid out without any hassle, Hotel and expenses covered, two seperate airlines on seperate bookings

Insurance with who? What connection did you miss?

It seems mine only pays if you miss the international flight (i.e. so if I fly to ny then miss internal flight = not covered but if I fly florida to ny then miss international home = covered).

Am I missing something, or just getting the wrong end of the stick ?

Surely the OP is talking about 2 completly seperate flights, rather that 2 flights that connect with each other.
i.e Air Miami from Miami to New York Flight A. Then Air Bear from New York to UK.
So there is no obligation whatsover for Air Bear to get him to his destination.

I did find this example of missed connection insurance, but I don't think that it would work for the OP as
a), its not a connection and
    b) a max payout of £500 isn't very likely to pay for a one way flight from NYC to the UK, if bought at the airport.

Yes. And my insurance with First direct will pay out for any missed departure be it car, train, or another scheduled flight but only for flight AT POINT OF INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE. £1000 too.

So leaving UK, car breaks down etc covered. Get to NY late and miss internal flight = not covered.

Flight home to NY is late and miss flight to UK = covered because this is international departure and yes it does mention return flights.

EDIT - Seems the link you provided - their insurance does cover this interal flight if your uk flight is delayed.

How long do you have for each connection and which NY airport are you flying to Orlando from?

Having booked it yet. I am considering overnight in NY each way to be honest to be sure (but nothing is 100%!).

Wouldn't it be much more (potentially) hassle free to book a through ticket with a stopover in each direction, or a MultiStop itinerary for ultimate flexibility ?

Well yes but we want to stopover in new york on the way home anyway.

And we want to fly with la compagnie (new airline) from luton to EWR. Business class for £600 pp return.

    Hi Paul

from your original post you were talking about connecting flights and now you're talking about stopovers.
If you're doing stopovers, you're golden - just allow plenty of time as usual to clear security, customs, duty free and the giant jelly baby shop.

If you're looking to take advantage of the new airline, you may need to get your finger out tout suite as I believe its a limited time/limited number of seats promo.

La Compagnie's flights are so late in the day I very much doubt there will be connections out of Newark that late in the evening. Make sure you pay by credit card as most people do not think they will survive for very long, they have been losing money on their Paris route and with only one plane at present and a second one on the way for Luton, I would be far more concerned at what happens if the plane goes 'tech' and doesn't take off at all?

    Yes totally agree.

Apparently they have an agreement with Icelandair to help out for things like this. Also, apparently, a few weeks ago they paid for all passengers to fly home on other airlines following problems.

They are certainly leasing their one, soon to be two, planes from Icelandair, but I am not sure that airline has any more spare planes and even if they did, they would not be kitted out in business class. Indeed Icelandair is often the cheapest airline across the Atlantic, and for a good reason. So, even if it happens, at least a long delay for Icelandair to send a plane to Luton from Iceland and then a delightful trip in 31 inch seat pitch for seven and a half hours, assuming the crew are not already out of hours, no thanks, I will pass on this offer
