Travel to Florida via NT - two airlines two bookings - any issues?

First flight booking would be with airline A from UK to Newark.
2nd flight booking would be airline B from NY to ORlando.

Obvious issues are what if flight A is late and connection is missed to Orlando?

And on way home, if flight B is late and miss flight back to UK?

In the past, we've done indirect flights but with same airline so no issues if the connection is missed. (In fact, once they put us up in hotel for night before flying us home next day).

Im guessing different airlines tough luck?

Is this something holiday insurance would cover? I know it covers missed departure (if car breaks down, train is late etc) but not sure about connections?

  • I think that you've hit the nail on the head.
If you're dealyed in either direction, you'd be like the Christmas turkey. Stuffed.

It depends how you're booking. If it's all booked under one booking on the same ticket then it works exactly like it's all under the same airline. Many airlines have agreements with each other and codeshares. If they've sold you the ticket then they're responsible.

If you're talking that you're booking them separately ie. UK-EWR one booking with airline A, then EWR-MCO a separate booking with airline B then yes you're on your own. Neither airline has any responsibility for your travel plans with the other.
  • Would be a separate booking hence the issue. Just checked my travel insurance and it does cover missed connection at point of international departure on outbound and return.

So if I missed flight back from EWR I'd be ok I think.

That cover is very unusual: if you are sure that you are covered then I would be grateful if you could post details of the insurer. However, it is more probable that this situation is excluded. If in any doubt, see if you can get something in writing to confirm that you would in fact be covered.

good luck with your plans Paul. I hope that you won't need to put your theory into practice
  • Flying to Orlando is a pretty competitive route. Is it really necessary to go with 2 airlines?

Or why not say spend a night or two in New York (or surrounding area)? Get over your jet lag there and do some sight seeing.

Is it? i missed connection due to delay and insurance paid out without any hassle, Hotel and expenses covered, two seperate airlines on seperate bookings

    Which insurance was that?

I looked long and hard for this cover, without success.
  • Am I missing something, or just getting the wrong end of the stick ?

Surely the OP is talking about 2 completly seperate flights, rather that 2 flights that connect with each other.
i.e Air Miami from Miami to New York Flight A. Then Air Bear from New York to UK.
So there is no obligation whatsover for Air Bear to get him to his destination.

I did find this example of missed connection insurance, but I don't think that it would work for the OP as
a), its not a connection and
    b) a max payout of £500 isn't very likely to pay for a one way flight from NYC to the UK, if bought at the airport.

How long do you have for each connection and which NY airport are you flying to Orlando from?
