Charity Auction Regret

It's a shame your wife didn't say, 'I'm going to do a pregnancy test/get results etc tomorrow so, just in case, don't be going mad at this auction'.
I'd have said that to my OH anyway. Not the pregnancy bit. Just the don't go mad bit.
Do you think you would have regretted it in the morning had your wife not had news for you? Doesn't seem like it would be too bad if you don't think you would have.Sealed pot challenge member #325

If it's any help, I work for a charity, and we recently had an email around at work to say that someone who'd bid on something quite sizeable at an auction we held last year couldn't now take up the opportunity, so would any of us like to 'bid' internally?
I don't know how the finance side of things is being arranged - the person who bid for this originally would have paid by now ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Some fantastic ideas here (love the "extra for the freezer" idea) but I would initially approach the last bidder.
Of course, they may have woken up in the morning relieved that they are over £1k better off, but I have twice felt that I had to withdraw and just been beaten. If someone had contacted me on either of those occasions and said "will you pay the last price you were willing to, and I'll top up the rest" I would have been delighted!
Definitely worth a go.
I'd add another idea that may or may not be suitable - how many people was the chef happy to cook for (in my experience these offers are usually for 6-12). Do you have the kind of family and / or close friends who would understand your dilemma, and love to join you for a celebration meal in return for a few hundred quid to the charity? I know a good few families who, if they could afford it, would regard it as great fun and a joke to tell in the future.0 -

When you've been trying for a baby for years and years and years, you learn not to put your life on hold. It's heartbreaking to think 'Let's not do *this* just in case I'm pregnant' then do the test with the inevitable negative result. You start off turning down job offers, and holidays, and house moves (and charity auctions perhaps) all with the expectation that there'll be a baby along soon. In the end you just get on with your life."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I think finding the next highest bidder will be difficult. Why not re-auction it at work? Doesn't have to be a big fuss, you can just do closed bids by email. Whomever now bids highest, gets the meal."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Sounds good, you could ask the chef to put on hold til baby arrives then have a celebration, with money going to the charity. Win win x
Biggest win is the lovely news xxNever again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -

It's a "heaven or hell dining experience" for 8 people. If only i had some friends that weren't also the parents of infant children I could charge them to come! It will make s good story when he/she is older
I phoned up and paid the charity the outstanding amount this morning.0 -
