Charity Auction Regret

Comments

  • I've often been to events where a charity auction has been held and there's been stupid amounts bid on things usually either because of drink or the brag factor coming into play.

What was the total amount raised at the auction (I'm assuming there were other lots on offer) announced? What sort of proportion was your winning bid to the total? What sort of publicity has there been about the amount raised?

Personally I don't think you're going to come out of this smelling of roses

Does this remind anyone else of the Friends episode where Joey buys a boat by mistake at a charity auction? :o

I think you should pay the entire £1300. I'd think that anyway - but especially since it was a *work* charity event.

If one of my colleagues bid for something at a work charity do, then I found out he didn't pay, I'd be likely to think less of that colleague in future. Probably not a huge amount less, but you really don't want a reputation for being flaky, or for not meeting your promises, or for any of the other things people might think about that.

Congratulations on baby though - that's the main thing right now!

If you can't find someone to sell this prize to for the full £1300, then you must pay yourself. Unless you can find whomever you beat in the auction although I suspect this will be difficult.

Maybe he could contact the second highest bidder (or whoever else may want the prize) to see if they still wanted it, and if they accepted, pay the difference in price so that the charity doesn't lose anything?

Thankyou. This is 100% what I've been thinking, having someone else say it verifies the truth.

    I think you're missing the point a bit. ;)

£5 for a fairy cake that was probably worth 50 pence, is a BIT different to almost one and a half grand for a flipping meal that would be worth no more than £60-70 IMO.

If you can't see that, then there's nothing else I can say to you mate.

Nope I'm not missing the point at all.

The VALUE of the item isn't the point as its a CHARITY auction. ;)

If I sponsor someone 200 quid for running a marathon (cost is actually immaterial) I'm doing it for the charity, not what it's worth to me, which is diddy squat. ;);) ... mate.
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door

Can you get the chef to cook 20 extra portions for the freezer?!

For that money, I'd expect to be fed for a year!

I don't believe in welshing out on an arrangement, but the charity is silly to count it's chickens on this one. £1,300...were you drunk at the time?

You are the one missing the point, and by quite a margin!

The point is that he paid that amount because it was for charity, value for money didn't really come into it.

Some of us could get offended by that phrase you know lol!

Seriously though I think the charity would be rightly miffed if the OP tried to back out of the deal....especially if they're a little charity where this sort of money would be a significant sum.

Pregnant or not if my OH came home and told me he'd bid £1300 for a chef to come and cook a meal I would not be best pleased (he almost did this with some rugby tickets -told me he'd bid a stupid amount (yes he was drunk) but was outbid ....luckily for him:D)
