But tax inherited on a car purchased before the changeover to the system is still valid until its expiry date, surely? The automatically cancelling rule only applies to cars acquired after that.

It can't have been cancelled by the previous owner because that required the disc to be surrendered, and the OP still has the disc.

Not if they "lost" it ;)

You didn't need the disc itself to claim a refund. You just filled in a different form declaring you've lost or damaged it.

Would be pretty mean to do that to your own son though?

It passed me by entirely! Not that I've bought a new car since then...

What, even the 5000 (approximation, actual number may be different) threads on here about it? You need to spend more time on the Motoring board :).

Everyone should have time for the Motoring board, if only to keep up with the latest persona of Darkmatter :D
  • So bottomed out the problem. No fine, just have to write them a letter.

When the old man bought it, it was a company car, the company for some reason declared it SORN.

He had it for a couple of weeks then I bought it off him, but not knowing it was SORN didn't declare it back on the road.

Stupidly, I would have thought the change in owner via the log book would have changed the SORN status anyway!?
  • If a car is on a SORN and then it gets a new owner, the new owner either had to redeclare it SORN or buy tax. If they did nothing then they would get fined.

  • Hi Sally,

Sorry that's wrong - it was SORN for insurance reasons, not tax.

    Don't ask.

But it has tax! If SORN but has tax, surely a V5 form change of owner implies it is back on the road.
