They like their payment up front. In fact they took the first payment a week before my account transferred.

In three months I've never been in debit.

For the second bill they decided to use a completely different last reading so I overpaid even more.

After three months I'm up to £76 in credit.

It's like a prepayment meter where I put lots of money in at the start of the month.

The one month in advance is well publicised and written clearly into the terms and conditions. How much do you pay per month?

The loss of interest to you is small but can be factored into your decision to switch. If they hold a £100 for a year at a generous 3% you can deduct a lost opportunity cost of £3. Most people would hold such a sum as an additional balance in their current account probably earning nothing.

Hengus has written some good advice about timing your meter reads so that you avoid estimates.Have they changed your Direct Debit?

If you are confident about your expected annual consumption you can calculate your annual cost quite easily and check whether your Monthly direct Debit is in line.If you feel their figure is overestimated talk to them and see if they will reduce it.

Ultimately, it is the tariff rate and standing charge which is the most important factor for you and presumably at the time of the switch they were competitive.

Been with GB for two months now. After a rocky start it appears to be smooth sailing now.

My switch date was the 13th of Feb so I submit my readings on the 12th of each month and my bills are exact. As others have pointed out the request for readings comes about a week early, so I get mine on the 6th.

My previous supplier, Ovo, have not played ball. They withheld £173 of credit until yesterday when they released £143, keeping £30 back because they are disputing my final gas reading. A quick call to GB has them opening a dispute against Ovo on my behalf which resulted in an almost instant e-mail from Ovo saying the funds will be released soon.

GB's website is basic, as has been mentioned many times in the thread, but I can submit my readings and wait for the bill to arrive.

Phone calls have always been answered within a minute during their working hours, which doesn't include weekends so that's a minor gripe.

    I personally would recommend GB.
  • Just signed up for them, and after a rocky start as the website wouldn't allow me to sign up (new build!) and the number to the wrong department being given, I'm now all setup over the phone and ready for my Welcome pack!

Let's see how things go and will update you. Kurt was very helpful on the phone, courteous and knowledgeable. Fingers crossed!

GB Energy appear to have launched a new tariff - Fixed 12 Ruby.

In the Midlands region this cost is 9.9435p per KWh and 15.750p standing charge. Crucial, no exit fee, fixed for 12 months.

Their current variable rate for the Midlands is 10.0275p per kWh and 15.803p standing charge.

For me that saves about £3 a year according to the Energy Club, being a low user and probably only getting through no more than 3k units a year.

£3 saved is £3 saved. No exit fee, no unit rise for 12 months. I could be tempted as I have moved before for less so... :)

£3 saved! Wow it would cost you more in time.

They say the Scottish are tight!

I came across this as fix up at end month with npower and a comparison showed this GB Ruby tarrif.

£100 saving it reckons from current tariff.

9.9 a unit but 20.7p standing charge, never even knew areas had different charges, so much for equality

    Warning about GB Energy Refunds

Been with GB for almost a year now, good service and keen prices.

However, I phoned as had a credit balance and asked for a direct debit (DD) reduction and a refund of the credit. Both were agreed.

Two months passed, I was paying the reduced DD and my statement showed the credit had been taken from my fuel account. The refund however had not reached my bank account.

A long winded process of calls and emails and it transpires the refund had later been ‘rejected’ by their Accounts department and they just happily sat on the money, did not contact me or return the credit to my fuel account.

The reason for ‘rejection’ was due an issue with the DD being reduced at the same time as requesting the refund, so please be wary if requesting a refund ; had I not checked my bank account I don't believe I would have seen this money again.

I have now received what was owed and promised.

GB Energy quote from their email:
"Our current refund procedures requires that an account is showing a full description of the reason a refund has been requested, if this description does not follow the refund procedures in place our financial team will reject a possible refund. We are not made aware of any rejections until a customer asks us to investigate this matter. We apologise for this and any inconvenience that this has caused."

Is that actually legal or is it another case of dowhattheywant dot com
  • Please do not switch!

Do not be lured in be the low prices, they are not worth the stress, errors and poor service.

GB Energy gave my previous supplier a made up meter reading double what it actually was, this left me almost £800 overdrawn when my final direct debit was withdrawn. Repeated complaints via telephone and later their website and twitter they have still not resolved the matter, let alone returned my calls.
  • I have been on both GB Energy and Avro Energy websites. Although both claim to save me around £80 per year (from EDF) they only drop my monthly DD by £1 or £2 pm (depending on the tariff chosen. Along with wanting a month's payment up front, that's £48 pa saving on my bill for a £36 up front payment. Erm.... no thanks. I'm guessing they'll bank the other £30 and offer it as a refund after a year.
