Transporting hat on airplane

Hi flying globespan to cyprus on friday. Off to a friends wedding. In true female style I have a gorgeous, but huge, hat I wish to wear. I have a hat box for it (john Lewis corrogated cardboard). Will I be allowed to take it as hand luggage? It's not sturdy enough for the hold! Thanks!

Just thought you would be interested to know that there was no problem at the airport - mainly because my darling husband to be forgot the hat box!!! SO it sat on the back seat of the car for the week while we were away.....

....although no-one else at the wedding was wearing one so perhaps it was a blessing in disguise
