Transporting hat on airplane

Options
Hi

flying globespan to cyprus on friday. Off to a friends wedding. In true female style I have a gorgeous, but huge, hat I wish to wear. I have a hat box for it (john Lewis corrogated cardboard). Will I be allowed to take it as hand luggage? It's not sturdy enough for the hold!

Thanks!

Well this is what it says on BAA's website about handbags:

"Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried WITHIN the single item of cabin baggage, not in addition."

I normally pop my handbag in a larger holdall that's within the limits to go through security. Have you got a hard case that the box will fit in, so it could go in hold luggage?

I've cracked it! OH doesn't carry a handbag - apparently he's not into 'manbags' so he can carry hatbox and I can carry my handbag (with Oh's book in it!).

everyones happy then - and if i eed to I can always pop it on to try and swing a free VIP lounge entry *though would need to be severely drunk to have the corouge to do such a brazen thing* :D

    thanks for your ideas guys

As you approach the security checkpoint, you take the hat out of its box and put your handbag into the hat-box instead. You clear security and then reverse the operation.

Unfortunately BAA are making up their own rules here, the airlines say that ladies can have one piece of baggage PLUS a handbag.
This is done to try and reduce security clearance delays - most of which are caused by BAA's inept management in the first place !
It was only this morning (Today programme) that BAA were blamed for making up their own rules as they go along.

    Totally and utterly wrong.

The 'one bag rule' is was introduced by the government as a result of the liquid bomb scare. It has to be enforced by all airport authorities, not just BAA and BAA are not 'making up their own rules as they go along'.

It doesn't matter what the airlines allow. If security only allow you one piece of hand luggage, that is all you can take.

The UK government's 'one bag rule' is causing problems at Heathrow (a BAA airport) because
    - passengers transiting the airport are allowed to bring two bags on their inbound flight, but can only leave with one bag; and
    - passengers leaving the UK not bothering to read their flight paperwork and still bring two bags, and then argue.

    Keep your hair on !

Perhaps you should have a go at the BBC too !

The major problem at airports are the STUPID rules that Government bring in to make people think that "they are doing something". Most of these rules actually do nothing at all to improve security. As you quite rightly say, the 'one bag rule' just causes confusion.

An example: you can still buy as much booze as you want when 'airside'. A broken bottle makes a wonderful weapon and its contents a wonderful fire bomb. Would I be a little cynical to suggest that commercial pressures have a bearing on this, in just the same way that there are no more security gates available at airports now than there were pre 911 ?
