Urgent: Opening a bank account with minimal ID

Hi,

I'm in a bit of a predicament, I've just started a new job and need a bank account for wages to be paid in too, preferably one with a debit card. The problem is I have little ID, the only ID I have is a Birth Certificate, a name change of deed and government & benefit letters from previous addresses, when going in to HSBC today to try and open a basic bank account they told me I'm over 18 so that's not valid and sent me on my way. I live at my Mum's at the moment so I don't have utility bills or any proof of address, how ever I did send off for a national insurance reminder letter hoping that'd be one proof of address but that will take a long time to come and I need an account sharpish, is there anything I can do? It has to be ASAP? Even some prepaid debit card (with NO monthly/spending fees) would do? All help appreciated, thank you.

Your employer has to transfer the money with your unique Customer Number as a reference.
Or they can transfer the money to your mum's account and then she can transfer it to your prepaid card.

    Hi,

    how long?
You can get a passport in about 1 week this time of year so that could be a faster alternative.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately there's a quid charge on purchases, putting money in to the account and at the moment I'm in a position where I'm needing to save.

Same with the passport, I can't really afford to spend that much money at the moment. It takes 4 weeks plus it's not good on its own I don't think! Thanks for the speedy reply guys.

A provisional DL can be cheaper, but some banks might not accept it.

    Really?

Spend a few more seconds on looking...

The only unavoidable fees in UK are 99p for the card and the same for ATM withdrawals.
and at the moment I'm in a position where I'm needing to save.

Same to you, look harder too and you'll see there's a charge for every transaction.

NatWest will accept your birth certificate if you're under 20, but that still leaves you stuck on the address. Might be worth contacting them to see what they say.

    It depends.
    I wasn't asked for any.
