    Mortgage Overpayments Pot £1079
  • Sounds like a busy and productive day:T :T .
I really need to have a good clear out myself. Having a new kitchen fitted in mid January so def need to clear kitchen cupboards out before then and have a good sort out. This is my worst room as I am a compulsive ktchen gadget buyer:o :o:o . I also stockpile food so need to start using some tinned stuff up too:o :o:o .

hope you managed to let DS run off some steam, nothing worse than having a child cooped up all day and having to find ways to channel their energy.

DD is currently mucking out her bedroom as we speak:D :D . This is the girl who will spend all day in the freezing cold and rain shovelling muck from her horse but cannot possibly manage to pick up clothes etc from her bedroom floor.I put my foot down once it reaches a foot high:eek:    .

Good luck with the rest of your clearing/organising.

Hi benben - you sound like you are enjoying these few days :j

I, on the other hand, just want to get 2008 under way - getting bored with 2007 now!!

Mushy, do a diary!!! It has really helped keep me focused and on track ;):D
Ex has phoned to say he'll be an hour or two late to pick up ds
My plan for today and tomorrow is:
    • List stuff on ebay today
    • Complete my tax return :o:o
    • Get rid of xmas decs
    • Recycle xmas tree
    • Buy new car tax
    • Thats about it, not sure how long the tax return may take and also not sure how much stuff I can find for ebay. I have loads but not worth putting some of it on at the moment (like brand new clothes that I've never worn) as people can get it as cheap in the sales so I dont think they'll be looking on ebay at the moment.

One of the main challenges I am involved with is the mortgage-free-in-3 on the mortgage-free-wannabee board. Basically its a bit like some of the challenges on this board, and we all set our own targets. It runs from April 2007 - April 2010, and my own target is to get my mortgage down to £50k by this time. This is to help me with one of my main aims in life which is to be mortgage-free by the time ds leaves school (2019). Here's how I'm doing so far ...

When my ex left us (2005) our mortgage was £122k
When I moved back down south in June 2007 my mortgage was £60k
With overpayments I have made so far this year my mortgage is currently £56,685
I have another overpayment to make next week which will bring it down to £56k

I am very pleased with my progress so far and have now been planning ahead ...

Each month I aim to save £200 for overpayments. My normal mortgage payment knocks about £100 off the total each month, the rest goes on interest. So, per month the total should decrease by approx £300. My first target is to knock £1000 off it by the end of March.

I have been playing around with an overpayment calculator and it shows that if I can keep up the £200 overpayments the figures should be roughly ...

    End of 2008 = £52,000 ish
June 2009 (fixed rate runs out) = £50,000 ish
    April 2010 (mortgage-free-in-3-challenge ends) = £47,000 ish
    1st Jan 2013 (5 yrs) = £35,000 ish
June 2019 = mortgage gone

I hope this doesnt seem out of place on this board, I know many people here have huge debts and I dont want to be insensitive to that. To me though, as a single parnet I do see this as a debt and I do class myself in a similar situation as I worry how I would pay it if I was ill etc, so for me reducing it is giving me more peace of mind.

Sorry for the long post, I just needed to get it all down so I can track it :D It makes me so much more motivated to get more money in too when I can see it reducing.

  • I don't think it's out of place at all. I think you're doing a super job and you make me want to be debt free so that I can start on mortgage free!
