Arnold Clark Return Policy

Been having a look around the internet for a couple of days looking for any information that could help me and I haven't found anything concrete.

I bought a car from Arnold Clark 6 days ago, because it would be cheaper to run and I needed a car with some sort of warranty on it for my own peace of mind. Turns out the car is not cheaper to run, and I'm not very happy with it at all. It's a lot of money to spend for a car I'm not happy with. I traded in my old car towards it, put down a small deposit and took the rest out on finance.

Basically my question is if I wanted to return the car I bought, am I able to within a certain amount of time? Or does it have to have some sort of problems/genuine reasons for return?

If I am able to return it, what would happen? What would I get back and what position would I be in?

Thanks in advance.

Surely the best people to ask are Arnold Clarke? If it doesn't say on the website give them a ring and find out.

I think your rights are reduced seeing as it's a change of mind rather than any fault with the car. Surely the time to do the research was before buying the car than after?
  • I'd done all the research I could before buying it. Read through hundreds of pages of information, it isn't information I've read that is putting me off, it's the fact that it just doesn't feel "right". The Gearbox is clunky. Still yet to determine if thats a fault with the vehicle or just me but I have done 500+ miles in it and I'm still not getting used to it. Also it is nowhere near as economical as expected and I would like to know roughly where I stand before giving them a phone.

Unfortunately your rights to a change of mind return lie purely with any goodwill AC may show ... you have no legal "change of mind" rights if this was a face-to-face purchase from the vendor's normal place of business.

If there is a fault, however .........

What doesn't "feel right" about it? What car is it, and what did you trade in?
  • I thought I may have read somewhere that AC have some sort of 14 day money back guarantee?

I traded in a Ford Fiesta ST for an Alfa Romeo Mito.

The gearbox is funny. First and second gear are very awkward to get into. However it only does this sometimes. I had a good read on this and it is a common fault with a very expensive fix but when people have tried to get it sorted they just get blown off as it is a temperamental fault, and that is with Alfa Romeo within its 3 years warranty, and the only warranty I have is with AC, so I'm pretty sure I have no grounds to stand on in that respect. A new Gearbox is somewhere around £2900 and AC Autocare only covers up to £2000.

To be honest I do like the car, I like how it drives and it does put a smile on my face, but it is just not what I thought it would be, I feel like I could have got something much better for the money so I am having major doubts and just seeing what my options are.

So you picked a car with history of dodgy gearboxes, found one with a dodgy box, and bought it and now want to return it?
    Good luck :)

All you can do is ask. I guess if it is an intermittent issue it didn't show up on the test drive.

Given it is a known issue, that might help your case for a swap.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

    Does SOGA cover buyers remorse?
  • 6 days and 500 miles isn't really scientific when it comes to working out fuel consumption.

what mpg was you getting from previous car compared to the Mito?
  • Yeah I will take it past one of the dealerships nearby and see what they think about the Gearbox.

and yes you are correct about not having an accurate mpg reading yet. I got about 34mpg in my old car on my commutes and I've been getting 39 in my new one. However that should increase as I get more used to the car.

Contact them ASAP and tell them you think there's a problem with the gearbox and want them to look at it. They are generally quite good for sorting niggles if you get it back to them quickly enough.

As for changing your mind, you'll be able to trade it back to them for something else, and if the paperwork hasn't happened yet you might be able to do it without adding another owner, but in reality the car is already 500 miles and 1 owner older than when you bought it, and that can have an impact on sale value.

I'd look to getting the gearbox checked out under the warranty and see how I get on with the car; you've already lost the money so may as well hang on to it a bit longer.
